• Dawg Gone It: Secrets of a First-Time Winner

Run by two enthusiastic dog lovers, Dawg Gone It in Monterey has been open and running since 2009. In February 2016, Rob and Stephanie Oliva decided to buy the business. Dawg Gone It is a first-time Business Excellence Awards (BEA) winner.
Dawg Gone It is a doggy daycare and lodging facility that offers a safe, comfortable place for dogs to stay and play while their owners are gone. Rob and Stephanie refrain from calling their services “dog boarding” because of the negative implication that the dogs will be locked up and bored for hours. Instead, they are proud to offer several indoor playrooms, outdoor walking opportunities, cuddle time, and overall a home-like environment for dogs to enjoy while their owners are away.
This is a first-time BEA win for the business, but they have been nominated twice before. Rob and Stephanie strongly believe that this is because they have lots of happy, returning customers. In fact, their returning customers make up about 95% of people that use their services. And because they don’t spend a ton of money on advertising, these happy customers help them promote their business by word-of-mouth.
When asked if there were any tips to offer businesses that want to increase recognition in the community, Rob suggested to prioritize offering fantastic service and letting your customers see how passionate you are about what you're doing. He also recommends going to local networking events, supporting other organizations and charities in the community, and asking happy customers to continue spreading the word.
Congratulations to Dawg Gone It on your BEA win!
