Business Roundtable – 2/9/2021 – 10:00am
MISSION: success in two stages of the Coronavirus threat:
1) response to the immediate threat; 2) economic recovery when the threat diminishes

Response to immediate threat
1. City of Monterey. Recap of current measures within the City. Cannabis: Outreach to stakeholders concluded; staff’s assessment and result of surveys to be presented to City Council on 2/24; vaccination distribution points are evaluated and will support County’s efforts on short notice; testing for ag workers arriving in the County from Arizona will not be mandated according to Public Health Director, despite efforts by Board of Supervisors and others.
2. Retail. Increase in business during weekends; slow build and renewed optimism for Spring/Summer; if indoor dining is adopted at 25% capacity it will result in a better outcome; maintaining labor force when improved economic situation returns will be a challenge, as many have left area.
3. State of California. Sacramento Report. Gov. Newsom feels the pressure of recall; large vaccination center in Central Valley is announced; legislature works on budget for a June approval; more information in next week.
4. Health Care. Montage reports cautious optimism re: trends; only 4 COVID patients in ICU; vaccination this week at Marina site (2,000 doses – appointments were filled in less than 1 hour); demand largely exceeds supply; current capacity is to administer 1,300-1,500 per day; WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway purportedly a large vaccination center.
5. Community Foundation for Monterey County. Collaborative update: vaccination infrastructure once supply is secured; focus given in testing; outreach to third party funders ongoing; Monterey County approved a program sending health care workers as trusted messengers to go into neighborhoods with high case numbers; County’s health structure is creating the shortage of vaccine supply in the County compared to Santa Cruz.
6. Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. PPP applications still processed by banks; SBA loan portal delayed some; California Relief Grant application window closed on 2/8; results to come within a week.
7. Non-Profit sector. United Way working on another round of rental assistance for low income families; free tax preparation for individuals/families with income under $57K/year is still continuing.

Monterey County is scheduling COVID-19 appointments for Phase 1A, Tiers 1-3: Healthcare Workers and law enforcement personnel that frequently respond to medical calls AND Phase 1B, Tier 1: Individuals 75 and older.

Montage Health is now scheduling appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine for people living in Monterey County who are 75 and older or who work in healthcare (Phase 1a, tiers 1, 2, 3). At the appointment, you must provide proof of age over 75 years, or, if a healthcare worker, proof of healthcare employment.

SURF! Busway and Bus Rapid Transit Project
MST listened to public feedback in conversations about the SURF! Busway and Bus Rapid Transit Project during fall 2020 and have integrated some recommended changes regarding the route, stop locations, and operational characteristics. With these changes, we anticipate that future SURF! riders will enjoy a faster connection between home and work or wherever they go, with a projected travel time of 16 minutes for the 6-mile stretch parallel to Highway 1, roughly 50% faster than during pre-COVID-19 peak-commute times.
With your help, the team is reaching out again to help us define the transit amenities that will encourage ridership. Our short survey is available here from now until February 19, 2021. We hope you will provide your input and also forward the survey link to your colleagues or other groups and people that you think may be interested.

In recognition of Black History Month, we wanted to share a note from our Chief Human Resources Officer, Laurie Pack:
In 1879, Mary Eliza Mahoney became the first Black woman to study and work as a licensed nurse in the United States. A daughter of freed slaves, Mahoney was a janitor, cook, and washer woman at the New England Hospital for Women and Children before she had the opportunity to work as a nurse’s aide and realize her love for the nursing profession.
Long before they were rightfully afforded the same legal rights as white Americans, people of color persevered through racism and segregation to make our country the great nation that it is—serving on the frontlines of our military, hospitals, schools, and other essential services. Today researchers estimate that Black workers make up about one in six of all front-line-industry workers.
At Sunrise, nearly three quarters of our employee population identifies as a person of color, and more than a third of our team members are Black. They are nurses, Executive Directors, Med Techs, Dining Service Coordinators, and Vice Presidents. They hail from countries across the world, such as Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Cuba, Brazil, and Jamaica. They bring richness, diversity, and culture to our communities, and joy, warmth, and vibrancy to our residents. Over the past 11 months, they have continued to demonstrate a commitment to our mission that is humbling to me, as a leader, and worthy of appreciation throughout the month of February and beyond.
As we recognize our team members and residents of color during Black History Month, I wanted to express my gratitude to serve those who have so bravely and selflessly served our country, and our communities.
