If you run a business or live in Salinas or the Monterey Peninsula, you’ll start paying much more for your sewer service starting with your July 2021 bill - that is, unless board members of the regional government agency Monterey One Water (M1W) change their minds. See the new rate chart to see we’re not exaggerating.
 
The board of this regional government, formerly known as the Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency, decided on March 30 to raise rates A LOT. They want to do a lot of construction, build their reserves, and pay pension obligations for employees. See the list of board members here.
 
Along with many other business organizations, the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce thinks this substantial and abrupt sewer rate increase is too much, too fast. This agency just increased rates in August 2020. It’s as if the past year of misery never happened.
 
You can protest the Monterey One Water sewer rate increase by going to the agency’s website at https://montereyonewater.org/315/Proposed-Rate-Increase and hitting the VOTE tab. (See attached.) Deadline to vote is June 7, 2021 at 4:00 p.m.

BREAKING NEWS: Monterey and San Benito Counties Move to Yellow Tier

In this new tier, the state allows the county to expand capacity at restaurants, gyms, movie theaters, indoor businesses and several other operations. Bars that do not serve food can reopen indoors with a maximum capacity of 25% or 100 people, whichever is fewer.
