Response to immediate threat:

  1. City of Monterey. Recap of current measures within the City. The American Rescue Plan Act allocating $6.5M to the City helps balance the budget; library, conference center, police and fire departments will reinstate some positions; MCCVB fully funded on "pay as you go" basis; reserve (15% of general fund) remains untouched; tourism "drive market" is booming and traffic shows its effect; vaccination efforts resulted in 4500 shots given through fire department, including to hospitality workers; “outdoor dining” is here to stay at least until Labor Day 2022; “El Cuartel Nuevo” featuring a 14-unit mixed-use development is finishing up this year; also Waterfront Resource Recovery Facility at the Wharf parking lot; affordable housing projects on Garden Road and other locations depend on State Water Resources Control Board giving water credits to the City; three cannabis dispensaries recommended by City staff at August council meeting (Old Town, New Town); no cruise ships expected in the next year.
  2. General Conversation: Hospitality Reopening: Challenges and Opportunities. Leisure travel market continues to show strength; groups and conferences also show positive signs of recovery with a more distant impact; international market is stop and go (Canada, UK mostly active); focus is on long-term strategy to attain long-term recovery; MCCVB works in tandem with County, Vintners and Farm Bureau to develop new infrastructure and tourism products.
  3. Hospitality & Tourism. Staffing remains biggest challenge to hoteliers and restaurant owners; unemployment checks are still being distributed and sick time deployed if COVID exposure; chronic lack of childcare; LA County moving toward masks inside again; conference center hosts Produce Marketing Association mid-July (700+ attendees), then TED; The Monterey County Fair is happening on September 3-6 and Artichoke Festival returning next month; Monterey Jazz Festival in September.
  4. Sacramento Report. Legislature passed a shell budget to make constitutional requirements; $262B budget deal has been reached; $100B surplus; $12B for long-term homeless program; 200,000 childcare slots to be filled in next four years and a pay increase for workers represented by SEIU.
  5. Health Care. Cases down to zero; last vaccine clinic was held last week; CHOMP returns to normal operations; elective surgeries (hip, knee, ACL replacements) show significant backlog; ER very busy; watching COVID possible variants but no visible signs of occurrence.
  6. Non-Profit Sector.  State Budget extends eviction moratorium through September 30, 2021; rent relief and utility bill assistance to low-income tenants and small landlords is continuing.

Thursday Safety Webinars Give PG&E Customers a Chance to Ask Questions and Hear About Wildfire Safety Progress and Public Safety Power Shutoff Improvements

Weekly regional wildfire safety webinars will be taking place every Thursday in July, providing PG&E customers with an opportunity to better understand the wildfire prevention plans and progress that has been made in 2021 and to share their feedback.

 
During the events, the PG&E team will discuss:
  • PG&E’s wildfire prevention efforts
  • Resources to help customers and communities before, during and after PSPS events
  • Improvements to PG&E’s safety technology and tools
 
Each event will feature a brief presentation, after which participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to PG&E representatives.
 
The Thursday webinar events take place each week from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will continue through the summer. The following webinars are planned for June:  
 
  • July 8 - Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo Counties
  • July 15 - Santa Clara, Santa Cruz Counties
  • July 22 - Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus Counties
  • July 29 - Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara Counties
