City of Monterey Continues Its “Roadmap to Cannabis”
 
At its 7:00 pm evening session tonight (August 17, 2021), the Monterey City Council continues its review and direction on the city’s “Commercial Cannabis Roadmap.” The discussion is listed as Item 10 on the meeting agenda, which can be found here: Monterey City Council Meeting - Tuesday, August 17, 2021.
 
The city commissioned an independent analysis of potential sales tax revenue (see page 59 of the city council meeting packet) and also conducted a broad survey of residents and other parties interested in commercial cannabis (see Retail Cannabis Survey Results). Commercial districts now under consideration for cannabis retail operations are Cannery Row, Old Monterey and the Lighthouse District. As indicated starting on page 84 of the meeting packet, here’s where groups and businesses stand on this:
 
  • Cannery Row: Cannery Row Business Association does not.
  • Old Monterey: Old Monterey Business Association supports retail cannabis. Note that commercial cannabis storefronts will not be permitted on Alvarado Street.
  • Lighthouse District: New Monterey Business Association supports retail cannabis.
  • North Fremont Street: North Fremont Business Association supports retail cannabis; neighborhood associations in the area do not.
  • Monterey County Fairgrounds: the Board of Directors has asked the City to permit events at the Fairgrounds that include sale of cannabis and cannabis-themed products.
 
The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has not taken a position on commercial cannabis, although our Government Affairs Committee has discussed the issue. On behalf of the Chamber, our Government Affairs Liaison is monitoring the Commercial Cannabis Roadmap.
