Breaking News: There Will Be No County Indoor Mask Mandate at This Time

Following today’s Special Board of Supervisors Meeting, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors will NOT enforce an indoor mask mandate.

Many members of the public spoke in public comment in favor and opposed to the measure. Before the vote, MPCC, as well as several other business organizations, sent letters to the Supervisors to advocate for not passing the proposed mandate as it was written.

In the end, only 3 Supervisors voted in favor of the mandate (Adams, Alejo, Root Askew). Supervisors Lopez and Phillips dissented. As this mandate would have required 4 out of 5 votes to pass, the motion failed.
 
In his comments, Supervisor Phillips commented about our COVID-19 infection stats trending in the right direction and if that changes, the issue could be revisited. Supervisor Lopez commented on trusting the judgment of the professionals, including Public Health Officer, Dr. Edward Moreno.
 
Notwithstanding the vote on an indoor mask mandate, all of the Supervisors support and encourage the usage of masks and vaccinations.
