We're Asking... How's Business?

On October 1, we will be conducting our annual Business Walk. The Business Walk will take place from 1:30 - 4:00 PM in the North Fremont and Broadway economic areas, including a brief meeting to start regarding procedure and interacting with business owners and employees. Post event gathering at Other Brother.

According to Alex, he has been encouraged by the community interest in this event and believes it will be a great event to foster/rebuild/continue connectivity between MPCC, members, and our community at large.

While our physical Business Walk will take place in the North Fremont/Broadway area, we are hoping to reach as many members of our community as possible.

Fight the Blight! Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Board Gets Ready for Demolition of Abandoned Fort Ord Structures

On September 13, the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve environmental review and a demolition contract to remove unsightly and decayed structures on their land parcels that were once part of Fort Ord. MST is cooperating with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) on this contract also to include demolition of decayed structures on TAMC land parcels. This demolition is funded by bond proceeds through a process developed in the waning days of the now-defunct Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA). Your Chamber supported the Fort Ord blight demolition bond.

Unexpected Outcome: Monterey County Board of Supervisors Does Not Require Indoor Masks for All People

Your Chamber of Commerce leadership agonized about what position to take on a controversial item on the September 7 Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting agenda to require all people to wear masks indoors (with a few exceptions) regardless of their vaccination or testing status. In the end, the Chamber joined numerous other Monterey County business groups to ask the Board for an exemption from the law for meetings and conferences at which everyone is vaccinated or tested in the last 72 hours.

As it turned out, two of the five county supervisors decided not to vote for the indoor mask mandate, and the proposal died because it needed a 4-1 or 5-0 vote to be enacted on an emergency basis. The Monterey County Public Health Officer did not take a position of support for this policy, and he noted the effectiveness of residents in keeping Monterey County relatively healthy.
