Recap


  1. City of Monterey. LESP funds beginning to be distributed this week. City is grateful for partnership with MPCC and Community Foundation of the Monterey Peninsula in rewarding redirected taxpayer funds to small businesses in Monterey. A joint media release is forthcoming from the The City, MPCC and CFMP. The Sports Center opened on Friday June 19th, with a slow start of 100 guests as we move into Stage 3. Reservations and masks are required. Prior to CV-19 daily attendance was around 700-800.
  2. The Chamber asked the participants today “what are the plans if there a second wave and SIP restrictions in place”.
  3. Hospitality & Tourism. MCCVB is focusing on a “Responsible Travel Initiative” to educate tourists and mitigate anxieties residents may have with visitors in the area. MCCVB is working with TMD Creative and the County to produce radio spots and billboard placement. Cities from Seaside to King City are participating. Marina will participate with window size flyers. Artwork is available to all businesses on their website. Occupancy stats at the lowest during the SIP were 8% and have steadily increased with May:31% (primarily essential workers) with June 11th showing 56% and June 12 at 48% occupancy. MCHA is hosting a webinar focusing on restaurants. Chris Shake noted the “No Mask/No service” effort supported by the City of Monterey for Fisherman’s Wharf. Nearly 2000 masked were distributed on the Wharf over the weekend, and the City provided signage to all businesses. Business was up 17% the first week and 13% the second. Convention Center: Training center at Convention Center setup. Banners with social distancing and responsible travel in front. Unable to currently conduct training as only religious services, weddings and protests can have 100 people or 25% of room capacity.
  4. Aquarium: Will open to members on July 9th, and to the public with restrictions on July 13th. Tickets will go on sale on July 1st. The aquarium is hosting a Community meeting on July 6th at 5:00pm regarding protocols and market research with Julie Packard and top executives.
  5. State of California. Sacramento report. Agreement on the State Budget yesterday. 
  6. Legislature in budget process to identify funding to cities. Potential of tax credit to individual and families ($4,000.00)
  7. Health Care. 1291 positive cases in Monterey: due to more testing and spread of the virus. CHOMP has two COVID-19 in-house patients. CHOMP considers this the "first wave". 12 fatilities in the county, 1 at CHOMP. No visitor policy still in effect.
  8. Community Foundation. No report.
  9. Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. No report.
  10. Retail. No report.
  11. Non-Profit sector. Helping to address the rent assistance needs through 211. Survey is out in community for businesses to collect data on rental needs for businesses/non-profits
  12. Education. Hartnell seeing increases in summer enrollment. MPUSD will start school on 8/5. Offering distance learning and a hybrid distance learning model. Group A meeting Monday-Tuesday and Group B meeting Thursdays-Friday, with Wednesdays for sanitation, small groups and teacher workdays-TBD. MPUSD sent out a survey and of 2000 respondents, 15% will not come back for any reason, about 1500 kids. With hybrid model, childcare access will be a critical issue-MPUSD would like to work creatively with the business community to help find solutions.

  16. MPCC. Drive in Movie at the Fairgrounds on the 4th of July weekend with Fri/Sat Night, Sat matinee. Livestreaming fireworks, and drive thru Food Fair on Saturday from 12-9.
