Seaside City Council Votes Unanimously to Expand Food Truck / Mobile Vendor Opportunities
 
At its October 7, 2021 meeting, the Seaside City Council voted 5-0 to authorize the city to issue up to ten food truck permits and regulate fees, hours, and locations for food trucks in commercial zones, residential zones, and open space and recreation zones. Permit fees will be waived for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Food trucks will be prohibited from parking in the West Broadway Urban Village. The Blue Zones Project - Monterey County would like to see the city eventually use incentives in the permit fee structure for vendors to prioritize offerings of healthy foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, and non-sugar-sweetened beverages.

The city council had adopted an emergency ordinance on February 18, 2021 to impose a moratorium on new mobile food truck use permits or any new food trucks. At that time, the City of Seaside had approved three active mobile food vending vehicle permits, for Monterey Catering, PT Catering, and El Peregrino. Though this new ordinance, the City of Seaside wants to "attract new businesses in a controlled manner and illustrate the city’s goal of supporting entrepreneurship.” Contact the Chamber if you have questions about this new ordinance.
New Public Transit Facility Opens in Anticipation of More Commuting

Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) celebrated the official ribbon cutting yesterday (October 11, 2021) for the new South County Operations and Maintenance Facility in King City. This project received federal, state, and county funding through Measure X (approved by Monterey County voters in 2016). It’s a step toward improving the ability of residents of King City, Greenfield, Soledad, Gonzales, and other South County communities to connect to Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula via public transit. Houses are under construction or planned in these cities and we can expect more residents there to make long commutes to regions such as the Monterey Peninsula, where housing for families and individuals is typically very expensive. In the meantime, your Chamber continues to support efforts to increase the supply of housing on the Monterey Peninsula that is affordable for workers at local businesses. Contact the Chamber if you have questions about bus service in Monterey County.
