MISSION: success in two stages of the Coronavirus threat: 1.) response to the immediate threat - 2.) economic recovery when the threat diminishes.

Recap

  1. City of Monterey. Agenda items for City Council meeting next week include; Master Fee Schedule for Parks & Recreation adjustments, Vision-Mission-Value drivers, for goals next few years, waste collection fee increase because of unfunded state mandates, re-hire 2 positions at Conference Center justified by demand-events/operations coordinator
  2. Hospitality & Tourism.  Week ending Nov. 2(before Thanksgiving) occupancy rate is 65% -which is 5% over 2020. Avg Daily Rate in County is up 27% from 2020. Groups help fill the gaps as we move into shoulder season-CA Clerk of the Board of Supervisors Assoc-Portola Hotel & Spa/Organic Growers Summit -Hyatt. Quiet overall in hospitality, possibly due to omicron variant threat or people spending time with families. MCCVB had pop-up visitor table and saw 60 people at Fisherman’s Wharf, usually see 100 on long weekends.
  3. MPCC. Spoke with business who cancelled 210 Thanksgiving reservations due to lack of staff. Very limited options for Thanksgiving as many businesses chose to remain closed. 
  4. Health Care. Cases steady and low. 33 people in-house with COVID. No one under investigation. Hospital is other wise busy. Watching Omicron variant.
  5. Retail. Report from Cannery Row regarding very successful and festive Christmas tree lighting on November 26th
  6. Financial, SBA, Loans, & Grants. SBA COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program and EIDL advance is coming to an end 12/31/2021.  
  7. Transportation. MST/TAMC worked collaboratively to remove blighted buildings on Fort Ord along Hwy 1. Near 8th street bridge. Beekeeper removed and relocated hive, sand used for foundation of buildings will stay and be used for ground cover, should be completed by end of year, 95% recycle rate after leads asbestos. 
  8. Government Affairs. MPCC GAC met on Nov. 29th and discussed AMBAG’s (Assoc. of Monterey Bay Area Governments) methodology for allocating housing needs for local jurisdictions. MPCC will send letter to AMBAG asking for consideration of giving employees an opportunity to live in reasonable proximity to their workplace. 87% of workers in the City of Monterey live elsewhere, many quite a distance away.
