Response to immediate threat

  1. Health Care. Since the onset, CHOMP has treated 22 positive cases, but none are in the hospital - 1294 in-house testing. Overall cases are still rising county-wide. CHOMP opened all operating rooms and ¾ of outpatient services. Help to local small businesses: allow personnel expertise to implement safe practices – in lieu of cafeteria, purchase pre-packaged meals from local providers – sell local wares in hospital shops.   2. City of Monterey. City budget faces $31M deficit in next fiscal year. Intense community conversations result in general positive feedback.
  3. Hospitality & Tourism. Monterey County lags behind Napa and SLO counties in destination marketing (“We are open”). National survey shows that half respondents intend to travel prior to July 4. CVB will start safety messaging with outdoor signs stressing local safety to gain consumer confidence. www.seemonterey.com for meeting planners focus group report. WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway: great PR success obtained with 6 local school graduations ceremonies. Protocols for track rentals are strict and difficult to enforce. Camping protocols are being studied to allow stay. July and August will be bare, but September looks good with multiple races.
  4. State of California. Sacramento report. Legislation will resume on 6/15. Many cities are attempting to obtain State and Federal financial support.
  5. Community Foundation. COVID-19 Relief fund for non-profits has given $2M to date. Efforts are shifting from Relief to Recovery. The Monterey Peninsula Relief Fund starts reviewing cases this week. Over 200 applications were received. www.montereychamber.com to donate to this Fund.
  6. Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. SCORE is hosting a webinar on Cash Flow Management. Congress is proposing additional flexibility re: PPP and forgiveness of loan obligations.
  7. Retail. Shopping Center. Del Monte Shopping Center underscores the creative ways of shop owners to engage their customers while respecting safety protocols. Most shops are going to open. Macy’s is still closed as of today. Need for industry protocols for beauty salons in a consolidated plan.
  8. Non-Profit sector. Flexible support from funders. Many organizations have a challenge to engage volunteers. OES Nonprofit survey shows half have applied for financial assistance, half are still providing services and one third stopped. Emergency Food and Shelter: most compelling requests are foodrelated, then rental assistance. Fundraising events have been cancelled, resulting in negative impact. Keep giving!
  9. Education. Hartnell College had a surprise surge in enrollment.
  10. Legal. Topics to be addressed by employers: Reimbursement policies to employees working at home – ADA accommodations regarding face masks and other safety protocols – Litigations to be expected regarding noncompliance of protocols. Cal OSHA offers free on-site service to businesses.
  11. Human Resources. “Getting Back to Work” webinar held on 5/29. Update attached.
