Recap
- City of Monterey. The Monterey City Council is continuing discussions at their meeting tonight (January 4, 2022) about boundaries for newly-created city council districts. See the proposed maps here: January 4, 2021 Monterey City Council Meeting - Agenda Item 1
- County of Monterey. Monterey County is implementing a program approved by the Board of Supervisors on December 7, 2021 to spend $3.1 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal funds on a COVID-19 recovery program for hospitality industry in partnership with the Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau & the Monterey County Business Council. - City of Seaside. The Seaside City Council will be voting on outdoor dining guidelines on Thursday, January 7. See the item here: January 6, 2021 Seaside City Council Meeting - Agenda Item 9
- Hospitality & Tourism. Representatives of local hospitality industry report lack of group meetings that typically support the industry during the slower winter months. On positive side, indications that local shopping and dining remain reasonably popular with local residents and day visitors from the San Francisco Bay Area and drive market. The Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau is developing a virtual services program, including an app and a trip planning tool for its website.
- Community Foundation of the Monterey Peninsula. The annual "Monterey County Gives" campaign - a collaboration of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and the Monterey County Weekly to support 170 county non-profits - ended up raising $9.5 million in 2021, as compared to $7.8 million in 2020 and $5.4 million in 2019. The number of donors has remained about the same but donation amounts were up, perhaps reflecting donor confidence in the stock market and the economy. The campaign also benefited in 2021 from a new $500,000 matching donor.
- Non-Profits. The YMCA of the Monterey Peninsula is continuing its involvement with 17 after-school programs with 700 enrolled children. They have played a key role in providing local child care since the pandemic began almost two years ago.
- Montage. 23 COVID in-patients, significant increase over last week at this time. Rapidly increasing number of positive cases, though strong majority do not warrant hospitalization. The strong majority of the inpatient cases recently are non-vaccinated people. Almost all the cases are Omicron. We have stood back up our COVID response protocols in preparation for a possible surge coming out of the holiday season, as a precaution. Important to note we have not begun to restrict any services or procedures at CHOMP or our other service delivery sites. Still allowing visitors, but in a restricted manner. In sum, strong uptick and preparing for a possible surge. We urge everyone to get fully vaccinated and boosted, and be very vigilant about mask-wearing, hand-washing, and keeping a good distance from people. That is, be very careful.
- Aquarium. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is now only offering rapid COVID-19 testing to Aquarium visitors (instead of the general public) because of a test supply shortage. This may be temporary.
- Education. The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District distributed free COVID-19 test kits to families and encouraged every student to obtain and use the test kit or get in-person tests before school resumes on Wednesday, January 5.
- Retail. Barnyard in Carmel saw steady sales in December. Reported three new tenants, and increased activity in unsheltered population.
- Financial, SBA, Loans, & Grants. The Chamber is teaming up with (SBDC) and individual members for webinars on Thursday, January 6 and throughout the year about government contracting, CalSavers (California's new retirement savings program), testing requirements, and advice about starting a business. - Transportation. Like many businesses, MST is experiencing post-holiday staffing challenges. Monterey customer service window at Tyler/Pearl is currently closed and some bus trips may get cancelled due to staffing.
