Recap


  1. City of Monterey. City Manager reported city will vote on final districts and election sequencing for 2022/2024. Planning for budget. Sales tax projections are good. State of the City virtual event on February 24 from 5:00pm-6:00pm.
  2. County of Monterey. Economic Recovery Countywide Business Retention program is being implemented, starting with outreach to traditionally underserved business owners. A partnership with Monterey County and the Monterey County Business Council. Reporting twice a year over three years to Board of Supervisors for accountability - ARPA (America Rescue Plan Act) funding. 
  3. Hospitality. Normal seasonal slowdown. Week of January ’22-45% occupancy-down 25% from ‘21 which was last year 60% occupancy. Average Daily Rate (ADR) is up-$140/night and $174 night-up 25% from ’21. Related to higher prices as hotels try to recover past losses. The SEEMONTEREY app will be available at noon today.
  4. Healthcare. High of 32 Covid cases in house in last 2 weeks, but now 19 in house, 6 ventilated, one covid related fatality. Monday-February 7th from 2-6pm at Del Monte Shopping Center-CV-19 Vaccine Clinic. Appointment required.
  5. Financial. Interest rates will likely rise in March
  6. Transportation. MST’s board of director’s will be asked to approve the new transit network at its February 14th meeting. This comes after 1 year of community involvement and input on improving the system.
  7. Construction. 2022 projected as a “flat” year. Spending Senate Bill 1(SB1) and TAMC Measure X the primary funds which are driving regional initiatives.
  8. Retail.  Cannery Row area-looking good for commercial activity for tenants, but construction materials have high prices and delayed by supply chain issues; stores are struggling to find workers, and some have closed or minimized hours.
  9. MPCC. Virtual presentation on new TRIO HMO on 2/3 at 11:00am. Get Zoom link.
  10. Aquarium. Aquarium opening a new exhibit “Into the Deep” on April 9. Read press release.
