City of Monterey Takes Action to Pursue New Housing Units
On March 15, the Monterey City Council voted to send a letter to the State Water Resources Control Board asking this regulatory agency to revoke its outdated Cease and Desist Order that effectively prevents the city from approving or building enough housing to meet its state-mandated Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA). The city will also ask various regional governments to join them in this campaign.
Your Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce supported the action. Our decision is based on the Chamber’s long-standing priority of increasing the supply of housing on the Monterey Peninsula that is affordable to ordinary people who work here. To make sure the Chamber’s position is not exploited by opponents of economic growth and job creation, our letter includes a statement clarifying that the Chamber “does not support a government-driven perpetual freeze on water supply for commercial activity.” We look forward to a time when more local small businesses can start and grow and their employees aren’t compelled to commute long distances to their jobs.
