MPCC Announces Candidate Endorsements for the June Elections
The Candidate Review Committee for the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce had a full day on Friday, March 25. The committee diligently interviewed twelve candidates for public office: three of the four candidates for Monterey County Sheriff, five of the six candidates for District 2 of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, and all four of the candidates for California State Assembly. One candidate for Sheriff did not respond until after the interview session but subsequently submitted a candidate questionnaire. One candidate for Supervisor cancelled a scheduled interview and did not submit a questionnaire.
This region is fortunate to have a robust democracy with many strong candidates for public offices. For two of the three offices, we selected candidates for endorsement.

Monterey County Board of Supervisors, District 2 - Kimbley Craig
Kimbley Craig is the Mayor of Salinas. She served two terms on the Salinas City Council from 2010-2018 and has served as a leader on various regional governments and regional non-profit organizations. She is currently President & CEO of the Monterey County Business Council. Mayor Craig has consistently shown strong support for promoting the regional economy, not only with words, but with actions. The Candidate Review Committee found her to be straightforward, honest, and informed with her responses to interview questions.

Monterey County Sheriff - Joe Moses
Joe Moses is a Captain in the Sheriff’s Department. He recognizes the need for changes and has a set of three goals to do this: (1) develop a Behavioral Health Treatment Center for people having mental health crises, (2) improve Department collaboration and transparency with the public, and (3) improve operational efficiency and morale, in part by focusing sworn deputies on law enforcement and shifting other duties of the Department to civilians. The Candidate Review Committee found Captain Moses to be a thoughtful leader who would make needed improvements to the Department without unnecessary disruption.

California State Assembly, District 30 - No Endorsement at This Time
The Candidate Review Committee did not identify a candidate who solidly fulfilled the Chamber’s criteria for an endorsement. The top performing two candidates out of the four candidates in the June election will run against each other in the November election, and we will be watching the candidates over the next several months for examples of their commitment to promoting the regional economy.
