Back Under Consideration: City of Monterey’s Fort Ord Land Parcels

Tonight (April 19, 2022), the Monterey City Council will consider spending $92,400 for a consultant to further review potential residential use of 127 acres of land adjacent to Ryan Ranch that used to be part of Fort Ord. After closure of the base in 1994, ownership of the land was eventually conveyed through the now-defunct Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) to the City of Monterey. The City zoned four of the parcels (103 acres) for Light Industrial/Business Park development and one parcel (24 acres) for Open Space/Recreational use.

It’s been a few years since the City Council has discussed the future of this land. In September 2018, the Monterey City Council received a report from the same consulting firm regarding land use alternatives and feasibility for these parcels, including opportunities for housing on this site. The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce at that time favored the use of this land for research and development, including business incubators, but also expressed openness to the idea of mixed-use development on the land.

In the summer of 2019, the City of Monterey issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop the land, with residential use as an option. The City negotiated with two parties that submitted proposals—Borelli Investment Company and NeuroScience Institute of the Central Coast, LLC—but in the end did not move forward with either party.

Women Warriors: Local Nonprofit Celebrates 25 Years of Women Supporting Women with Breast Cancer
In April 1997, four local women battling breast cancer felt ancillary support beyond medical care was needed in this community for those dealing with the disease. And they decided they were the ones who would lead the charge.

Twenty-five years later, the Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey County, run by a 10-member volunteer board of breast cancer survivors, has provided tangible support to thousands of women and a few men, enabling them to focus on recovery.

The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce was honored to celebrate this milestone alongside the organization with a special ribbon cutting ceremony held at the MPCC offices on April 6, 2022. Read more about the Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey County in their Monterey Herald feature.
Monterey County Health Needs Collaborative is a group of organizations dedicated to improving the health of the Monterey County community. The partnership includes Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System, Mee Memorial Healthcare System, Natividad, the Monterey County Health Department, and United Way Monterey County. 

These trusted local entities have worked closely during the pandemic to provide our community with education, resources, vaccination clinics, testing, and more. Forming the Health Needs Collaborative is a way to broaden our partnership and leverage our resources to meet common health goals.
