MISSION: success in two stages of the Coronavirus threat: 1.) response to the immediate threat - 2.) economic recovery when the threat diminishes.

Recap

  1. City of Monterey. Presenting 2022-2023 Budget to City Council on 5/17 with revised projections for revenue sources and expenditures. Like many, City is experiencing higher operational costs. Also, City Council will discuss City’s RFP for affordable housing development next Tuesday. Mid-Pen Housing and Community Housing. Water is not adequate for those sites. Should the City offer these sites if they can’t maximize the number of residential units 9sub-optimal building)? Should fees be waived? Should units be limited to Monterey residents?
  2. Health Care. Montage -No Covid patients in hospital for last few days, first time since pandemic began. Ohana Project under construction-projected to open in one year. In 2019, 1900 youth patients seen, in 2021-21,000. The need is great.
  3. Hospitality & Tourism. Pop-Up tables at Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row over Memorial Day weekend.
  4. Human Resources. TPO – CAL OSHA update published on May 6 with an eight-page recap on May 7 on website. Much improved from earlier notices. Definitions are simplified, clearer, and now aligned with California Department of Public Health. Cal-Savers – any employers with 5+ employees without a retirement plan must join CalSavers deadline is June 2022, it is sponsored by the State of California. Businesses are encouraged to learn about this requirement. TPO offer to members for supervisor training-“Do I Coach, Correct, or Say Good-Bye”?
  5. Economic Vitality Committee. Francine Rodd-Monterey County Safe, Affordable, Quality Child Care Act. https://www.yes4montereycountykids.org/
  6. Transportation.  75% ridership wearing masks, although no longer required. MST is considering changing fare structure to a flat charge. MST board yesterday approved a new fee structure for college students. See item 6-1 staff report. Trolleys back this summer.
  7. Construction. Prices up.
  8. Financial, SBA, Loans, Grants. Workforce Development Board administering $2500 microgrant is still available for application - very small businesses. Workforce Development Board website.

A near capacity crowd of over 5,000 provided plenty of support on a Saturday night, including many MPCC members. The second Monterey Bay home game is this coming Saturday, May 14, against Rio Valley at 7pm.
