City of Marina Moves Forward on Residential and Commercial Development
On May 23, your Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee received a City of Marina Community Development Department presentation about numerous projects that are recently completed, in progress, or planned in the city. This includes residential units for people of all income levels, including homeless veterans, college students, and ordinary workers. The city is moving forward with a new round of demolition of Fort Ord abandoned buildings. New hotels are coming, Imjin Parkway improvements will soon be underway (under the direction of the Transportation Agency for Monterey County - TAMC), and Joby Aviation is building new facilities at the airport. Contrary to some claims about “out of control growth,” the City of Marina population has dropped 1.5% since the April 2020 census. Your Chamber points out that commercial activity - including hospitality - is an important source of revenue for Monterey Peninsula local governments.
Housing Element Workshops Include Chamber Participation
Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) invited your Chamber to have a representative as a panelist at its May 23 Monterey Peninsula Housing Workshop in Seaside. The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce consistently supports policies that provide a balanced choice of housing options so the local workforce can afford to live here, while preserving and protecting the region’s international appeal and quality of life. Your Chamber representative expressed concern about recent regional population and school enrollment decline and listed inadequate water supply, failure of developers to get project financing, construction costs, and environmental lawsuits as major obstacles to building housing that ordinary people can afford. Seaside Fights the Blight and Plans for Housing
On May 26, the Seaside City Council voted to approve a $485,321 construction contract to demolish the abandoned Fort Ord Visitor Center. This is another step forward for Campus Town, a mixed-use density development planned on the site of blighted properties near the CSUMB campus. Your Chamber supported this project when the Seaside City Council approved it in March 2020.
Election Day Is Tuesday, June 7
On June 7, you’ll have a chance to vote in a primary for federal, state, and local public offices. Here are the Chamber positions:
1. All Monterey County residents will vote for County Sheriff, and the Chamber has endorsed Joe Moses.
2. North County residents (including residents of Castroville, Prunedale, Moss Landing, Aromas, part of Salinas) will vote for a new Monterey County Supervisor. (Two-term Supervisor John Phillips is retiring.) The Chamber has endorsed Salinas Mayor Kimbley Craig.
3. Del Rey Oaks residents will vote on Measure B, which would effectively stop the Fort Ord Regional Trail and Greenway (FORTAG). The Chamber has supported the FORTAG concept as a part of the 2016 Measure X plan for the Transportation Agency of Monterey County (TAMC). We oppose Measure B and ask residents to vote NO on Measure B. The Chamber's Business Excellence Awards (BEA) Dinner increases public awareness of the vital role business plays on the Central Coast, and gives recognition to those businesses that have achieved excellence in their fields. 300-plus Peninsula business and community leaders attend to show their support for the local businesses that make up the backbone of our community. 1,500-plus votes are cast by Chamber members as well as the general public, and awards are presented to the top businesses in 16 categories.

Monterey Bay Football Club Celebrates Military Appreciation Night Presented by Coastal Roots Hospitality

The night began with free Military Appreciation Night t-shirts being handed out to the first 1,000 fans to enter Cardinale Stadium and was capped off with the Union’s 4-2 victory over the visiting Switchbacks. At halftime, Coastal Roots Hospitality presented a $32,600 donation to Task Force Antal (TFA), a nonprofit organization specialized in crisis management and evacuation support for U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, allies, and their families.
Next up, Monterey Bay F.C. hosts rival side Oakland Roots SC at Cardinale Stadium on Saturday, June 4. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT and can also be streamed live on ESPN+.
