  1. City of Monterey. Today the Monterey City Council will vote on banning of flavored tobacco products, its Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget, and the formal procedures to officially declare elections in November. The City of Monterey is planning to change the pedestrian crossing patterns at the intersection of Del Monte Boulevard and Washington Avenue. This intersection is the traffic light at the Old Monterey end of Lighthouse Tunnel near the closed urgency care center. Pedestrians will cross in a two-phase process using the traffic island near the entrance to the tunnel, which will reduce significant traffic backups resulting from pedestrians currently being allotted 55 seconds to cross Del Monte Boulevard. Funding for this project will come from the city’s voter-approved Measures P and S as well as state grants.   2. Healthcare. COVID-19 cases are on the rise, which includes an increase in hospitalizations. CHOMP has 27 hospitalized today with 3 of those in the ICU (42 hospitalized in the county). Over last week, FDA, CDC, and the Western States Scientific Workgroup concluded the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines safe for 6 months to 5 years of age. These pediatric vaccines should be arriving in Monterey County in the coming week. 
  3. Hospitality & Tourism. The MCCVB Annual Meeting is on September 7 at the Embassy Suites and is open to the public. MCCVB plans to release its community-driven, Five-Year Strategic Plan at this event. MCCVB will be sending mail to businesses promoting its SeeMonterey App. State of industry is strong but volatile. No decline in demand. 60% of business  comes from the SF Bay Area and some tech companies are having in person meetings on the Monterey Peninsula again. Labor shortage is a major problem, with shortages acute for bartenders, housekeepers, and banquet servers. Cannery Row reports 100% occupancy for street level tenants - exceeding the pre-COVID rates - with Tipsy Putt miniature golf pub as a high-profile new tenant. Foot traffic is robust and at similar pre-covid levels. Cali Roots was a successful event at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, with nearly 12,000k daily. The Ink at the Bay Tattoo Festival was also a recent success. But the Artichoke Festival “fell short.” The Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival is coming next.
  4. Real Estate. Doug Yount of Shea Homes reports some slowdown in demand for housing at the lower end of prices, presumably because of higher interest rates for mortgages. Meanwhile, progress continues with planning and construction associated with The Dunes in the City of Marina and with planning for The Enclave in the City of Seaside.
  5. Non-Profit. Meals on Wheels seeing rise in demand for meals-challenging to meet with enough volunteers. If interested in volunteering please contact Susan Elwood, at selwood@mowmp.org
