Climate Action Plan May Mean Changes for Your Business

Your Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee received a presentation yesterday from Monterey County’s Sustainability Program Manager about the development of the “Community Climate Action and Adaptation Plan” for unincorporated areas of the county (land outside of the boundaries of the county’s 12 cities). To slow global climate change and cut greenhouse gas emissions toward State of California goals, businesses in unincorporated Monterey County may have to change some operations or practices. Business may be eligible for government grants and loans to pay for some of these changes, but it is reasonable to assume that implementation of the Climate Action Plan will increase expenditures or reduce revenue for some businesses. Recycled Water Means Everything Is Connected

The Monterey One Water (M1W) regional wastewater agency board of directors spent 2½ hours at their meeting last night discussing whether a proposed small-lot 17-home development in the Casanova neighborhood of the City of Monterey should be allowed to connect to the municipal sewer system. Because the government currently prohibits new connections to the water system, the developers are temporarily planning to supply the houses with well water. However, Monterey One Water and Monterey County Water Resources Agency officials are concerned that wastewater generated from that well water has chemicals that will burn lettuce and other leafy greens, because the wastewater is recycled through the Salinas Valley Diversion Facility as agricultural irrigation water to the Castroville Seawater Intrusion Project. It’s an example of how interconnections through recycled water projects (including the Pure Water Monterey program with many source waters) can affect plans to build things. Charity Drawing tickets are $100 each, and 100% of the sales proceeds – up to $200,000 this year! – benefits Natividad Foundation. The drawing for the car takes place at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® on Sunday, August 21. Ticket buyers need not be present to win.
