  1. City of Monterey. Hot weather inland is bringing in the tourists. The Monterey City Council will recognize Rick Johnson today at the occasion of his retirement after two decades of service as Executive Director of the Old Monterey Business Association. This is a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing and promoting the economic vitality and community spirit of Old Monterey. Also on today’s Monterey City Council meeting agenda: Approval of two exclusive negotiating agreements with two affordable housing developers (MidPen Housing and First Community Housing) for potential development of two city-owned sites. The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce submitted a letter to the city council in support of these agreements. Placement of a cannabis-related business tax measure on the November ballot. Ban on the sale of flavored tobacco products and single-use electronic smoking devices. The City is also arranging a vaccination clinic for youth.  
  2. Healthcare. 13 patients today at CHOMP who were admitted for COVID. Last week there were 22. A few months ago there were zero COVID patients. CHOMP is maintaining its current visitor policies and protocols. The master plan for Montage Health-Ryan Ranch medical campus located at 2 Upper Ragsdale Drive was approved by the City of Monterey 20 years ago. Buildings A, B ,C, and D have been built since that time. Building E is last remaining building, last night there was a board meeting with the Monterey Water District to secure water rights for the last building was approved. Suicide Prevention Services of the central coast Beginning 7/16 (soft launch), a new easy to remember number: 9-8-8 is being rolled out nationally – It’s a suicide and crisis lifeline number Monterey County Behavioral Health, Monterey County Office of Emergency Services, and MC Hopes are partners on this project locally Calls are handled locally by Suicide Prevention Services 24/7. It’s the same services as before for those in crisis, but an Easier number to remember than the old number. The old number will still work.   3. Nonprofits.   4. Community Foundation. COVID-19 collaboration working with VIDA. Continue to use infrastructure and pivot, or close it down. Stock market downturn has hurt fund balance and donations, but know that cycles go up and down. Grants - for inclusive economic development, especially Salinas and Salinas Valley.
  • Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. Rising prices and interest rates. The Employee Retention Tax Credit is ongoing and Monterey County has the CA Microbusiness grant available. CalCoastalSBDC is still accepting students for the CA Dream Fund Grant program which offers a grant opportunity for new startup businesses that meet the eligibility requirements.
