Recap

1. City of Monterey. The City of Monterey is negotiating with Tesla for the installation of Tesla and universal charging stations at the parking lot for Fisherman’s Wharf (Wharf 1). Some Wharf tenants are concerned about the loss of parking spots, but the City is aware that it needs to keep up with the electric vehicle (EV) transportation policy demands imposed by the State of California.
2. Healthcare. August 31 is Overdose Awareness Day. Fatal overdoses from opioids have increased eight-fold since 2018 in Monterey County. More than 1,200 flags are on display from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Colton Hall lawn to honor those whose lives have been affected by addiction. An Overdose Awareness Day Resource Fair for the public will be held at the Monterey Conference Center 3-5 p.m. on August 31. Community members can park in the Downtown West Garage at 340 Tyler Street; the first hour is free. The event is supported with funding by the Montage Health Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation. Currently, Community Hospital has 15 COVID patients with 4 of them in the ICU. Monterey County Hospitality Association, in partnership with Montage Health, Blue Zones Project and Portola Hotel & Spa, is offering a FREE Biometric Health Screening & Wellness Fair for all MCHA members on Wednesday, September 7 from noon to 4:00 pm at the Portola Hotel.
3. Hospitality & Tourism. The Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau reports a “record breaker” Car Week, with hotel room revenue up 23.5% over the pre-COVID year of 2019, even though occupancy was down 4% compared to 2019. Auction revenue of $471 million set new records, exceeding the record of $394 million from 2015. MCCVB is aware of “mixed reviews” on traffic patterns. They will be working to understand and address issues related to short-term rentals and small events, which are “becoming more of a phenomenon.”
