Response to immediate threat
1. City of Monterey. Special meeting of the Council on 9/23/2020 – 4:00pm: goal and priority workshop: 70+ projects and efforts for normal course of business; please review priorities and share your comments; cannabis discussion is coming at October 1 meeting.
2. Hospitality & Tourism. Effort to lobby Board of Supervisors and Dr. Moreno to allow small meetings, events and indoor dining; 25% of maximum capacity or 100 people; with winter season approaching, more layoffs and/or closures are certain; Highway 1 opened through Big Sur.
3. Retail. Del Monte Shopping Center: all restaurants open for outside; few retail stores still closed included Apple store and movie theater; LUSH may open by end of October. Barnyard: outdoor dining picking up; few tenants closed. Carmel Area Wastewater District: important meeting on Thursday 9/24/2020 at 9:00 am, attempting to limit refunds and adjustments to accounts; want to collect fees in totality when businesses have usage dropped by 50%+. 4. State of California. Sacramento report. Update today on color system and changes; unemployment agency in chaos; money going out to local governments for homeless during coronavirus.
5. Health Care. Current report. Positive case not slowing down in County; 8 patients at CHOMP; 70% of positive cases at the hospital do not have symptoms; Dr. Taplin is available for free consultations c/o Montage Health.
6. Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. Lobbying continues at Congress for PPP forgiveness; bills are Payroll Protection Small Business Forgiveness Act (S 4117 and HR 7777); urge your representatives to support these.
7. Education. Chamber will hold its 1st Annual Education Forum on October 16, 2020 via ZOOM. Confirmed and invited guests include: Dr. Eduardo Ochoa of CSUMB, Mr. David Martin, Interim Superintendent/President of MPC, Col. Hausman of DLI, Francine Rodd of First 5, MPUSD Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh, Dr. Deneen Guss MCOE, Leaders of NPS, MIIS, Hartnell College and the Panetta Institute ; Theme:” How has the current Pandemic Changed the Face of Education?” with sub-segments on technology, childcare and workforce development.''
