MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

  1. City of Monterey. January 17 - City Council Meeting. On January 25 at 4:00 pm, the Monterey City Council (with a new mayor and two new city councilmembers) will have a special meeting/study session to discuss priorities for 2023 and reevaluate past priorities. Water and housing are expected to remain important. The City reports a slight reduction in TOT revenue in November 2022 compared to October, but the number is even with November 2021. People are going to Sierras for snow, so we expect lower visitor numbers now than 2021.

  3. Healthcare. High levels of in-patient and out-patient visits for COVID, flu, RSV. CHOMP had to cancel surgeries last week because no beds available. Encourage people to remain up to date on vaccinations.

  5. MCCVB (Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau). Weather response - go from promotional to informational mode, for example, whale watching may not happen later this week; Big Sur Highway 1 closures are SOUTH of the businesses. 2022 was better than 2021. 93% occupancy of 2019, Room nights 92% of 2019. Oxford Economics consulting firm’s Tourism division is projecting short and shallow recession, GDP decline of 1%. Not sure how much that will affect meetings and leisure travel. Project full recovery/pre-covid levels in 2024 China recently relaxed travel policies but COVID cases very high.
