MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

1. City of Monterey. Weather briefings began December 27, busy since then. Yesterday at Monterey City Council - afternoon consideration of renewal of the Monterey County Tourism Improvement District. Evening discussion of personal wireless facilities regulations. See Meeting Agenda here. 1000 visitors in town-with guests patronizing at the conference center today with guests patronizing local businesses.    
2. Healthcare. CHOMP has been fully operational with top-of-the-line generators.  No procedure postponed due to lack of power.
3. Hospitality. Crisis management mode, less promotion, more sharing information, and outreach from hospitality members who provided discounted rates to evacuees. Cancellations over three-day weekend. Working to counter messaging that Monterey Peninsula was an island for group travel. TID renewal program at City Council meeting. They want more funding through Tourism Improvement District to compete against Napa and other competing areas that have fewer hotel rooms but more funding.
4. Non-Profits. Community Foundation of Monterey County. CFMC has established a Storm Relief Fund - $100,000 from CFMC, $100,000 from Monterey Peninsula Foundation and other gifts. CFMC is creating summary of what has happened in affected areas Workers cannot get out to farmland to work because of flooding Working with Community Bridges (based in Santa Cruz County) and have worked with them in the past. Monterey County has been declared a major disaster area by FEMA along with 5 other counties, including Santa Cruz.
5. United Way. United Way of Monterey County activated their 211 system in collaboration with Monterey County Office of Emergency Services, OES.  County operated shelter at Monterey County Fairgrounds.
6. Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. Mortgage applications at near low.  Flood insurance is expensive, a difficult decision for homebuyers.  
7. Insurance. Claims coming in from flooding and tree falls.  Inquiry on “content coverage” to flood policies. Clients are trying to add it as rain falls but need 30 days. Loss of Use is being covered if you are in an evacuation zone.  Doesn’t affect your deductible.  Mudslides from burn scars are covered under fire insurance for many carriers, but not if mudslides are caused by something else.
