Marina City Council Will Again Consider Asking City Voters to Approve Bond Measure for New Public Buildings

At its February 22, 2023 meeting, the Marina City Council will vote on a contract with a consulting firm to to assist with public engagement, community outreach and messaging materials for a potential $50 million bond measure for the construction of a new fire station (including a ladder truck), a police station, and a community center/city hall facility. The city council discussed this idea throughout 2022 and ultimately did not put a bond measure on the November 2022 ballot. When voters approve a bond measure, the government borrows money from investors and pays it back over time, with interest, using property tax collections. Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Will Again Consider Asking District Voters to Approve Bond Measure for Teacher and Non-Certified Employee Housing

Repeated surveys of Monterey Peninsula Unified School District teachers and employees have shown (not surprisingly) that housing costs are the top reason why the school district struggles to recruit and retain teachers and other employees. Perpetual orientation and training of a large crop of eager but inexperienced young new teachers each year is a costly exercise and likely hinders student academic performance. Since 2017, district leadership has considered the development of housing for its own workforce as a powerful incentive to improve recruitment and retention. The school board discussed this idea throughout 2020 and ultimately did not put a bond measure on the November 2020 ballot for workforce housing. Now, the school board may consider putting a bond measure on the ballot for 2024. As noted above, when voters approve a bond measure, the government borrows money from investors and pays it back over time, with interest, using property tax collections.
