MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

1. City of Monterey. On Thursday, March 2, the Monterey City Council will consider final approval of a new wireless ordinance, and on Tuesday, March 7, it will consider a revised Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) ordinance. The city council will also consider a position opposed to a potential statewide ballot measure, The Taxpayer Protection & Government Accountability Act, which would require voter approval for tax increases and certain fee increases. This would put additional hurdles on local governments seeking to increase revenue.
2. Hospitality & Tourism. MCCVB has launched The Benefits of Booking Direct with Monterey Hotels. MCCVB has introduced the Monterey County Artichoke Trail, a series of restaurants and farms to visit in Monterey County related to artichokes. This will be promoted with the upcoming “National Artichoke Day.” Monterey Peninsula restaurants were featured in a February 9, 2023 San Francisco Chronicle article, "How This Treasured Coastal Enclave Became a Culinary Hot Spot."
3. CHOMP. The hospital continues to be at or near capacity because of influenza and pneumonia cases. There will be a virtual drug and alcohol community meeting on Monday, March 6 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. Zoom Link.
4. Retail. Barnyard is in escrow. No big changes expected from ownership change.
5. Transportation & Construction. At their December 12, 2022 board meeting, the Monterey-Salinas Transit Board of Directors awarded a contract to Graniterock-Meyers for SURF! Busway and Bus Rapid Transit Project Construction Management-General Contractor Pre-Construction Management Service. MST is continuing its Contactless Fare Payment program. MST is continuing its free EcoSmart Pass program for students of Hartnell College, Monterey Peninsula College, and CSUMB.
6. Real Estate. Low inventory continues.
7. Financial. Disaster Recovery Center - now an outreach center 1441 Schilling Place, SBA personnel handling. Not a lot of people come to SBDC for that, they go directly to disaster center. If homeowners, renters, businesses, and non-profit organizations including places of worship cannot make it to the Disaster Loan Outreach Center they may apply online until the deadline, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance.
8. Monterey Herald. March 4 will be Readers’s Choice publication. Support your local businesses and winners!
9. MPCC. 114th Annual Awards Dinner on March 18, 2023 recognizing our local leaders and businesses and their commitment to the betterment of our region. On April 11, 2023, MPCC will be hosting a Business Insights Breakfast at the Ferrante Room with a panel discussion with local law enforcement leaders, business concerns, and disaster response: Supervisor Adams, Sheriff Nieto, Chief Dave Hober among others.
