MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

1. City of Monterey. The City is updating the General Plan, Housing, Safety, and Land Use Elements. The state is requiring the City to plan for 3,654 new housing units. Monterey 2031 - Community Survey: Help build a housing plan for Monterey! Amid the ongoing housing shortage in California, the City is required by law to plan for at least 3,654 new homes over the next eight years to accommodate current and projected need. With relatively little vacant land available for new development and the risk of environmental hazards like wildfire and flooding in certain locations, accommodating new housing will require a thoughtful strategy. The City needs to hear from you to make sure the strategy reflects the priorities of our community. Please take this survey to help plan where new housing, employment, and shopping should be located and how to achieve other community objectives like improving transportation options, revitalizing older commercial streets, and preserving and enhancing neighborhood character. The survey can be completed in just five minutes, but there are options to provide more input and dive deeper into the issues. Take the survey now.
2. Community Foundation for Monterey County. Fund for Parajo: Santa Cruz & Monterey Based Community Foundations Partner on Flood Relief for Pajaro Outpouring of support since January. 2 million with +/- 900k allocated in grants already. FEMA is there, but relief efforts complicated by high number of undocumented people and renters, it is an evolving situation. Monterey County and Santa Cruz County have done well. Working with Santa Cruz Foundation. Trying to set up a “Small Business Relief Fund” in partnership with local trusted leaders to help with grants. Through IRS 3833 grants can be made to for profit organizations.
3. Monterey County Farm Bureau. Still working on tabulation on crop damage from March storms. Survey still open for reporting. Salinas River channel - what do we need to do to address better flow? Less flow capacity now than 1995 flood. Arundo and buildup of sediment, including ash. Levee repair requires permits, three major ones. Several agencies involved including Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, US Army Corps of Engineers and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
4. Healthcare. A few weeks ago, Community Hospital opened a Crisis Stabilization Unit for adults 18 years and older. The dedicated space is for people who go to the Emergency department in a mental health crisis, but don’t require hospitalization. The unit is staffed with psychiatrists as well as registered nurses and social workers with mental health training. A separate, adjacent area for those 17 and younger is scheduled to open in late May, partially staffed by Ohana, Community Hospital’s innovative mental and behavioral health program for young people. Montage Health launched a new Center for Physician Excellence on March 30 to support professional development, personal wellbeing, and community connection for the nearly 500 local physicians affiliated with Montage Health. The aim is to cultivate and sustain a thriving local medical community by providing Montage Health-affiliated physicians with wellness services, continuing education, grants, financial resources, and more. 
5. Financial. Homeowners, renters, businesses, and non-profit organizations may be eligible for disaster assistance from SBA, due to physical damage or economic injury because of the severe winter storms and flooding that began February 21 and continuing. You can find more information in English here and in Spanish here. 6. Construction. Graniterock delivered 450 backpacks stuffed with supplies to students of Pajaro schools. Graniterock won joint venture bid for Monterey Airport apron.
