MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.
Recap:
- City of Monterey. Town Hall Meeting on evening of Tuesday, May 30 to talk about rental registry. City council wants to obtain data from landlords about their lease arrangements with tenants. (Chamber Editorial: to inform the city council as they consider future policies related to rental housing.) Budget - presented on June 6 to City Council will include stipends to community groups for events. A city rental assistance program will be considered as part of budget. Grants from the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program require very low maximum income, so we can create our own to expand eligibility. $98 million for general funds, with all other funds it is $180 million (a huge increase from five years ago). March and April showed dip in TOT and parking revenues (April 2023 down 9% from April 2022)
- Montage Health Foundation. Happy National Hospital Week! May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. CHOMP is illuminated green every night in May to honor Mental Health Awareness Month. Crisis Stabilization Unit for adults opened at CHOMP in March for people who need emergency help but not hospitalization. Will expand to youth later this month. Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health - 19,000 patient visits last year. Ryan Ranch campus under construction and set to open this fall. Residential unit opens Spring 2024. Hans noted the City of Monterey has been inspecting, the metal roof structure is built with 2 machines flown in from Dubai/UAE to form centerpiece. Learn more about Ohana's revolutionary design.
- Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau (MCCVB). 2022 Tourism Impact report. Long-Term Strategic Roadmap. 2022 hotel revenue significantly surpassed 2019, yet restaurant spending is significantly below pre-pandemic levels. This suggests that the destination’s visitor mix remains out of balance with an over-reliance on drive market visitors who are known to bring their food and beverage and spend less in restaurants. Group and meetings hotel revenue spending in Monterey County are up 47% in 2023 year-over-year. International visitors from Canada, Mexico and parts of Europe are returning to California, however, high-value markets in Asia lag behind in recovery. In the first quarter of 2023, Monterey County experienced setbacks including severe storms in the first quarter of the year causing a two-fold economic impact. First, January through March travel levels were below 2022. Secondly, the extensive snowfall in the Sierra Nevada range is expected to lengthen the ski season into July creating further competitive pressure. Visit Responsibly Campaign active.
- Monterey Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds is rocking and rolling! Large amount of private events booked, the new Monterey Motorsports Festival during car week and RV bookings are up approximately 16% first quarter 2023.
- Non-Profit. United Way Monterey County Reports CFMC is reorienting work during pandemic to mental health focus. a county wide mental health collaboration. The AIM 2023 Youth Mental Health Symposium was held on April 19-21, 2023 at the Monterey Conference Center. (Note: AIM is not an acronym.) Impact of Pineapple Express flooding continues, particularly Pajaro Valley and in Salinas Valley, where there is still significant need.
- Transportation. MST Monterey Trolley will operate for the summer beginning Memorial Day Weekend (See Map). MST is hosting a “Transit Fair & Family Fun Day“ Saturday June 10th 10 AM -2 pPM at Marina Transit Exchange (280 Reservation Road in Marina). It’s a free community event to celebrate transit and learn what’s new with the SURF.
- MPCC. Save the Date: MPCC Food for Thought. No-fee, hybrid seminars. Upcoming dates, topics & speakers: May 18 - "Simple, Portable Voluntary Workplace IRA Programs" with Cal Savers; Jun 14 - "Estate Planning" with Julie King, ESQ. of Pierce King, Professional Law Corporation.
