5/23/2023 - 10:00 AM

MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

  1. County of Monterey. May 31 - June 1 - County budget hearings. See documents related to the Fiscal Year 2023-24 Recommended Budget as presented to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors Budget Committee on May 24, 2023: Fiscal Year 2023-24 Recommended Budget - Staff Report; Fiscal Year 2023-24 Recommended Budget - Executive Summary; Fiscal Year 2023-24 Recommended Budget - Slide Presentation for Committee
  2. Montage Health Foundation. Montage is expected to open the Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health in late August. Montage Programs: Prescribe Safe - addressing drug overdoses and drug addiction from opioids; Free Narcan - to stop or reverse effects of opioid overdose; Kids Eat Right - to help elementary students in your Monterey County school or youth program learn how to make healthy choices.
  3. Monterey County Convention & Visitors Bureau (MCCVB). Hotel revenue for the first week of May 2023 surpassed revenue for the first week of May 2022, which is a turnaround from the lower revenue generally experienced this year. MCCVB continues its Monterey Pro v Pro series that pairs a national professional golfer with a local professional golfer. There will be a Pro v Pro event associated with the 78th U.S. Women's Open golf championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links on July 6-9. MCCVB now has an advertising campaign about being a responsible visitor to Monterey County. Billboards are in various locations in California as well as on Monterey-Salinas Transit buses. For more information, see the April 19, 2023 MCCVB press release "Responsible Travel and Sustainability are Key to Monterey County’s Tourism Growth".
  4. Financial. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched an "America's Top Small Business” program in 2023 that recognizes achievements of small businesses and highlight their contributions to America’s economic growth. See America’s Top Small Business Application and Information.
  5. Real Estate. There’s a shortage of housing that’s affordable on the Monterey Peninsula, and the Monterey City Council is responding to that with a plan to require property owners who lease to tenants to register their properties with the city and indicate how many tenants they have and how much they pay in rent and deposits. The purpose of this plan is to compile and analyze data that confirms a need for government restrictions on rent increases. Such policies are called “rent stabilization.” The City of Monterey will be sponsoring a "Rental Housing Town Hall" on Tuesday, May 30 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Monterey Conference Center (One Portola Plaza) and virtually on Zoom. Learn more at haveyoursaymonterey.org/rentalinventory. We expect hundreds of renters will participate to explain their financial challenges in paying rent, and they will ask the Monterey City Council to impose strict limits on how much landlords can increase rent. Obviously, such blunt government intervention in the housing market can have unintended effects on supply, demand, living conditions, and price. If you rent property in Monterey and have a different perspective on these government restrictions, please attend and comment.
  6. Human Resources. TPO will be hosting seminar for businesses on how to deal with employee conduct called “silent quitting” and “ghosting” that have become common since the COVID-19 public health restrictions. Coach, Correct or Say Goodbye addresses strategies to deal with these situations: (1) long-term employees who are now performing at a bare minimum standard, often as a silent protest against perceived injustices in the workplace regarding work assignments during the pandemic; (2) job applicants who don’t show up for the interview; (3) successful job applicants who don’t show up for the first day of work.
  7. MPCC. Save the Date: MPCC Food for Thought. No-fee, hybrid seminars. Upcoming dates, topics & speakers: Jun 14 - "Estate Planning" with Julie King, ESQ. of Pierce King, Professional Law Corporation. If you are interested in participating or presenting a no-fee teleconference or being added to the list, please contact monica@montereychamber.com.

Next teleconference will be held Tuesday 06/06/2023 at 10:00 AM
