Recap:

1. City of Monterey. Monterey City Council meets today (June 6, 2023). Afternoon session includes revisions of policies for nine budget reserve funds: Sports Center, Conference Center, Technology Infrastructure, City Facilities, Public Safety Facility & Maintenance, Library Facility & Maintenance, Parking Garage Facilities - Parking Fund, and Sea Level Rise - Tidelands fund. City council will also increase its goal for the General Fund Reserve for Economic Uncertainty from 16.6% to 20% of General Fund operating expenditures. The City of Monterey and the Monterey City Council continue to focus on fiscal responsibility as a priority. In the evening, the Monterey City Council will vote on its Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-2034 Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Budget (Items #15 and #16). It will also take steps to begin environmental review of proposed cannabis businesses and temporary cannabis events as required under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). On Sunday, June 12, the Pacific Ocean launch event of the annual “World’s Toughest Row” will occur in Monterey. Fourteen teams will row from Monterey to Kauai, Hawaii. On Saturday, June 17, the City of Monterey will commemorate the Juneteenth holiday with the opening of a Buffalo Solider exhibit at the Presidio of Monterey Museum in the Lower Presidio Historic Park. Soldiers from the all-Black 9th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army were stationed at the Presidio from 1902-1904. The museum is outside of the Presidio gates, open to the public, and free. Museum hours are Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.   
2. Utilities. On Saturday, June 3, a large tree in Pebble Beach landed on 30-inch pipe, prompting alert to approx., 45, 000 Cal-Am customers regarding water service. There was a large geyser, quickly stopped leak by closing valve and rerouting water service. Water pressure was lost; a few households lost service. Some restaurants had to shut down. 3CE's commercial energy programs still have funding available. That includes their ag electrification program, new construction electrification program, and the "Electrify Your Ride program. Learn more here.
3. Farm Bureau. Later this month, the Board of Directors of the Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency (SVBGSA) will approve a final budget that allows the agency to begin implementing its state-mandated, state-approved comprehensive groundwater sustainability plan. By 2040, the Salinas Valley Basin is supposed to be “sustainable,” that is, the amount of water entering the basin is balanced with the amount of water leaving the basin. The plan will require significant increases in property tax assessments and water connection fees for agricultural and industrial companies operating in the Salinas Valley. In April 2023, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) informed the Monterey County Water Resources Agency that as of June 30, 2022 it had taken back a $17,000,000 grant initially included in the fiscal year 2019-2020 state budget for construction of a fish screen for the planned Interlake Tunnel Project between the Nacimiento and San Antonio reservoirs. Delayed because of various issues, this tunnel project would allow additional water to be stored in rainy years for agricultural use in the Salinas Valley. The Monterey County Water Resources Agency wants to get the grant reinstated.
4. Workforce Development Board. Monterey County Workforce Development Board is looking for businesses like yours that are interested in hosting social media interns this summer and we’ll pay the bill! Learn more here.
5. MPCC. Chamber representatives attended the Central Coast Broadband for All, Digital Equity, and BEAD [Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment] Planning Workshop at CSUMB on Friday, June 2. The event was coordinated by the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) in coordination with state agencies and the counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito. The State of California is designing solutions to ensure that all California residents have access to high quality and affordable internet service, devices, skills training and digital support.
