Innovative Organic Waste Recycling at ReGen Monterey

On Friday, July 21, the Monterey Peninsula’s waste management agency ReGen Monterey (formerly known as the Monterey Regional Waste Management District) held a launch ceremony event at its Marina facility (the dump) to highlight a new pilot project: a “biochar” slow pyrolysis machine. This machine uses high heat to convert compostable material (such as landscaping waste and agricultural waste) into a black substance that is used as fertilizer or as material in cement or asphalt. ReGen Monterey staff say that this biochar product can be sold at a higher price than routine compost. In addition, biochar is promoted as a way to sequester carbon to keep it from entering the atmosphere as a “greenhouse gas” that affects climate. The project is directed by a company called the Sitos Group, in collaboration with Monterey Pacific and the Keith Day Company.

Public-Private Partnership Will Now Manage Laguna Seca 

On Tuesday, July 18, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to approve a concessionaire agreement with a group called Friends of Laguna Seca for operation and management of Laguna Seca Recreational Area from January 1, 2024 through December 31, 2028, with the possibility of two 25-year extensions. This is a public-private partnership that also includes the current operator and manager, A&D Narigi Consulting, LLC, who will continue to operate and manage the WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca under the Friends of Laguna Seca umbrella.

Laguna Seca Recreational Area is owned by the County of Monterey. It includes the WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca, campgrounds, a hospitality venue, and a public rifle and pistol shooting range. In addition to hosting races and events, WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca allows the public to use the track for bicycling on its Twilight Bicycling events. See Upcoming Events for details.

Meanwhile, Granite Construction Company recently completed a Start-Finish Bridge and Racetrack Resurfacing Project for WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca. This was an important infrastructure improvement project for the future financial stability of racetrack operations.

Monterey County Gives! 2023 RFP Application Now Open

Participation in Monterey County Gives! is open to 501(c)3 organizations serving Monterey County. To be eligible organizations must respond to the RFP and meet all of the criteria listed below.

Not all applying organizations meeting the eligibility requirements will be accepted into the program—the selection committee will make its final determination on the final number of participants.

Inclusion in Monterey County Gives! is limited to one project per non-profit organization.

Eligibility:

1. The organization is a nonprofit in good standing with the IRS and State of California.
2. The organization has programming/projects in Monterey County that directly impact Monterey County residents.
3. If the nonprofit has participated in previous Monterey County Gives! campaigns, you must have raised at least $5,000 in one of its last two Monterey County Gives! or you will not be eligible for one year.

DEADLINE: By 5 p.m. PST on Friday, July 28th. No exceptions. Any application received after the deadline will not be considered.
