Honoring Lou Calcagno, Lifelong Dairyman and Longtime Monterey County Supervisor
A decades-long public servant and a highly respected dairyman, Moss Landing native Lou Calcagno died Aug. 31 at the age of 87.
Although locally well-known for his work as a Monterey County Supervisor, those in the tight-knit agriculture community were more than familiar with his Moon Glow Dairy in Moss Landing. An early adopter of conservation methods, Calcagno was a founding member of the Ag Land Trust, working to preserve and protect prime farmland from development, and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation and advisory committee. He also had 25-year stint on the California Milk Advisory Board.
First elected supervisor in 1998 after 18 years as a county planning commissioner, Calcagno played a key role in shaping county growth, finances and overall policy while casting an even wider net with his national, regional and statewide dairy industry representation and state Coastal Commission service in the 1990s.
Donations may be made in his honor to the Lou Calcagno Memorial Scholarship Fund at Agri-Culture or to Palma School, in memory of Lou Calcagno.
