MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

City of Monterey

  • Rental Registry software on website. Satisfied with software launch, no major glitches. Exceptions are available on the website.
  • City is taking applications for cannabis retail operations. See Commercial Cannabis for the applications.
  • Budget outreach meetings taking place, election year for mayor and two councilmembers.

County of Monterey

Healthcare

  • CHOMP/Montage turning 90 in 2024. Community engagement, partnerships, and sponsorships throughout the year.
  • Montage recently invested 50k in Big Sur Health Center and Seaside Rotacare Clinic, respectively.

Human Resources

  • Unprecedented number of bills in the employment sector in 2024.  Top 5 changes: 1. Paid Sick Leave (SB616), 2. Reproductive Loss Leave ( SB848), 3. Minimum Wage Rate Changes: Health Care Worker (SB525) and Fast Food (AB257), 4. Workplace Violence Prevention (SB553), 5. Cannabis/Marijuana (SB700). Learn about these laws and more at TPO HR's "Annual Employment Law & Leadership Conference". MPCC Members receive a discount. Use Code: MemberADD (a $100 savings!)

Hospitality & Tourism

  • Q2 (Oct. - Dec.) occupancy countywide remains even year over year.  November numbers show MoCo remains in the middle of the pack with our competitive set, consistent with the summer comparison. Last week of December saw higher occupancy year over year but a slight dip in ADR (average daily rate).
  • Luxury campaign launched and will run through April in drive and fly markets. A little bit different than the leisure “Find Your Way Here” campaign, this includes placements with AFAR, Modern Luxury and The New York Times.
  • Encuentra Monterey is a PR initiative to better reach our Spanish-speaking market. Monterey featured in recent publication of National Geographic (Spanish, English).
  • New series "Inside Monterey" by See Monterey — features a local personality or hospitality business, and they share their local insider tips. Ep. 14 features Nathan Sambar of Monterey Glassworks.
  • See Monterey has established the Wayfinding Destination Education Series, a new training and education program, designed to connect and support the local hospitality industry.

Real Estate

  • Quiet, but chatter is mostly regarding challenges with getting homeowner’s insurance.  According to State Farm, one out of five are getting insured.
