Marina Coast Water District Has Specific Plans for Water Supply
On January 12, 2024, your Chamber’s Economic Vitality Committee received a presentation from Remleh (Rem) Scherzinger, General Manager of the Marina Coast Water District (MCWD), concerning that district’s current water supply and future plans to maintain and increase that supply. The water district has jurisdiction for potable water, wastewater, and recycled irrigation water in the City of Marina and the former Fort Ord, including parts of the City of Seaside, City of Del Rey Oaks, and unincorporated Monterey County, as well as CUSMB (California State University, Monterey Bay) and UC MBEST (the University of California Monterey Bay Education, Science, and Technology Center). It has seven active potable wells for drinking water, eight potable storage reservoirs (soon to increase to ten), and a recycled water system that is part of its Regional Urban Water Augmentation Program (RUWAP). Through MCWD, recycled wastewater from the Monterey One Water Regional Treatment Plant is now irrigating the Bayonet Black Horse golf courses in the City of Seaside.
Currently MCWD is planning an Indirect Potable Reuse project to inject treated recycled wastewater into the Deep Aquifers for storage and future extraction. It is proceeding with pipelines that tie into other water districts. It is planning new wells inland (the Eastern Distribution System) to replace existing wells that may be subject to seawater intrusion. It is planning to resurrect an old dormant desalination plant and build a new small desalination facility at the site of a deep inactive well. It wants to store floodwater in the aquifer under Armstrong Ranch and work with other agencies to expand the storage pond of the Castroville Seawater Intrusion Project (CSIP).
