Recap:
City of Monterey
- Emergency Storm Response: There were significant tree falls in the City of Monterey and the Monterey Peninsula on Sunday, February 4.
- The City of Carmel appears to have been hit the worst, with the city addressing 70 fallen trees
- In the City of Monterey, the Monterey Fire Department responded to 181 calls related to weather incidents from 8:30 AM on February 4 to 8:30 AM on February 5
- Of those 181 calls, 130 were on February 4 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- From (:00am-1:00pm there were 110 calls
- Eight homes and two businesses were damaged by fallen trees: three homes were red-tagged (not safe to enter) and two homes were yellow-tagged (people can go inside, but unsafe for habitation)
- PG&E appears to have planned and carried out an extensive power restoration campaign but note that damage is extensive
- The City of Monterey set up a generator and established a Resource Center at the Monterey Public Library in partnership with the County of Monterey as a warm location with Wi-Fi, charging stations for residents to charge electronic & medical devices, limited refrigeration for medications, water, and snacks
- So far 500-600 people have used it
- Retail Commercial Cannabis: Tonight (February 6, 2024), the Monterey City Council will review the outcome of the retail commercial cannabis permit application process
- The City of Monterey received thirteen applications. However, staff is now asking the city council to consider a 180-day suspension of processing applications for Storefront Retailer Type 10A (adult-use) and/or Medicinal Type 10M, with refunds issued by the city to applicants who choose to withdraw from consideration. Arguments for this suspension include new estimates of tax revenue generation and concern about crime

- Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP): The Monterey City Council will also discuss and provide guidance for the Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee regarding submissions and prioritizing projects that address public health, safety, and essential facilities
- The City of Monterey projects $10.3 million available for this program in Fiscal Year 2024-2025. Funding comes from the diversion of 16% of revenue collected through the Transient Occupancy Tax

Healthcare
- CHOMP, clinics, emergency department, and urgent care at 100%. CHOMP has robust generator system and remains open
- New neurosurgery program with first pilot surgery successfully completed recently
- This is a new service, hopefully eliminating need to travel to Stanford or San Francisco
- Slight uptick in Covid, more of a “swell not surge”
Hospitality & Tourism
- New format of AT&T had good exposure for 1st part, then weather impacts
- Local residents impacted by recent storms can find a list of hotels offering special rates on the Evacuation Rate Program tracking sheet
- Groups in conference center have not cancelled, good sign
Agriculture
- Salinas River lagoon is now open to the ocean. Arroyo Seco is feeding water to the Salinas River as a tributary. Agriculture industry is watching Salinas River for possible flood impacts
Construction
- Slides on Arroyo Seco Road west of Carmel Valley Road continue to be a concern. Delivered lots of material to Big Sur, but will wait for water levels to come down before using to stabilize river so that materials can be well placed
