Positive News for Monterey Peninsula Unified School District
Unlike some other California school districts, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD) has shown solid and consistent leadership in overcoming long-term challenges resulting from COVID public health orders. Recently the district has experienced some additional successes. After five years of hostile litigation and excessive demands for environmental review, MPUSD is now able to proceed with construction of athletic field improvements at Monterey High School, including the installation of football field lights. On March 9, the Monterey High School boys’ basketball team won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division IV state championship, defeating a team from Los Angeles at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. And three MPUSD schools - La Mesa School, Marshall Elementary School, and Monte Vista TK-8 School - have received California Purple Star Program designations from the California Department of Education for their support of students from military families.
MPUSD educates many children of the employees of Chamber members, and some MPUSD graduates will remain in the region to become employees, business owners, and future community leaders. (The Chamber supports a public policy agenda that would entice more MPUSD students to stay in or return to the region where they grew up.) The Chamber’s Government Affairs Liaison is serving for a fifth year as chair of the MPUSD Citizens Bond Oversight Committee. The Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will continue to support the district and seek new areas for cooperation.
