3/19/2024 - 10:00 AM
MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.
Recap:
City of Monterey
- Today: Monterey City Council meeting. See agenda.
- Meeting is an afternoon session only
- Topics to be discussed:
- Receive a Report on the City’s Sewer Utility Master Plan and Draft Wastewater Rate and Capacity Fee Study - this will mean city sewer rate increases. Note these rates are separate from the Monterey One Water rates (which also recently increased)
- A new, relatively innovative Monterey Rental Assistance Program - $250,000 from the city’s general fund will provide assistance to residents in paying rent, making deposits, and obtaining legal counsel in landlord-tenant disputes. Funding was not allocated from the city budget for this
- Reduce Speed Limits on Certain Street Segments - a change in state law allows the city to round-down speed limits instead of rounding up
- More than 40% of units are now registered with the city’s rental registration program, with the cooperation of property management companies. The software bought for this purpose works well
County of Monterey
- Annual Budget Planning Schedule:
- 3/28, 9:00 am - Budget Committee Meeting
- 4/2 - Full Board Workshop
- 5/29-30 - Board Budget Hearings
- Next Economic Development Committee meeting Scheduled for 5/1
Healthcare
- Montage held its Annual Meeting for the first time in 5 years
- 500+ attended at the Monterey Conference Center
- Montage has created a $5 million contribution to the Community Foundation for Monterey County to create the new Montage Health Fund for Teachers. The fund will provide financial support to all of Monterey County’s public and private school teachers to reduce their healthcare insurance premiums, this includes MPUSD.
- Montage celebrated 1 year of Moxi robots at the hospital. They are used for delivery of lab results, medications, etc. allowing staff to spend more time with patients
- Robots have made 23,000 deliveries, saved 20 million staff steps, and covered 8000+ miles
Hospitality and Tourism
- Numbers down year over year, same decline seen in other equivalent areas
- See Monterey ran a commercial during Academy Awards for the first time ever — focusing on fly and drive markets, it was a cost effective way to get into high viewership programming
- Visit California's Outlook Forum - See Monterey won two Golden Poppy Awards in the categories of Best Crisis Recovery and Best Group Meetings Market

Additional Service from the Monterey Regional Airport for Three Destinations
Monterey Regional Airport has announced second nonstop flights between MRY and three destinations: Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Denver (DEN) and San Diego (SAN). These additional nonstop flights are an increase in daily frequency to the three markets.
“This increase in service is just in time for summer travel! Passenger traffic at Monterey has been doing extremely well and is now rivaling our historic levels. In fact, the Denver, Dallas and San Diego flights have performed so well that passenger loads on our current flights are at or near capacity,” said Michael La Pier, Executive Director of Monterey Regional Airport. “Adding a second daily round trip to these three destinations means more connection opportunities throughout the growing MRY route system. It also means an increase in the number of visitors flying to the Monterey region for leisure, business and conventions,” La Pier continued.
