Highway 1 Lane Closures

Big Sur — Rocky Creek Slide

Caltrans engineers continue to assess a slip out of the roadway on Highway 1 just south of the Rocky Creek Bridge. The initial slip out and closure of the road took place on the afternoon of Saturday March 30.

Crews are continuing to gather information at the site which will inform next steps to stabilize the edge of the roadway and design a permanent repair. In the next several days crews will place 500 feet of concrete barriers along the centerline of the roadway. This will help define a channel for convoy vehicles to pass through and will provide protection for workers working on repairs.

Convoys are scheduled in the north and southbound directions through the repair site at 8 am and 4 pm daily. These convoys are operating under close supervision by engineers at the site. The forecast or the Big Sur coast calls for possible rain in the coming days. An update will be provided should there be a need to cancel convoys later this week.

Seaside/Monterey Guardrail Repairs

Travelers in Seaside and Monterey will encounter lane closures on Tuesday and Wednesday this week as Caltrans maintenance crews perform guardrail repairs on Highway 1.

Travelers in Seaside on Tuesday April 2 will encounter a closure a closure on southbound Hwy. 1 of the #1 (left) lane at Sand Dune Dr. from 9 am to 12 noon.

Travelers in Monterey on Wednesday April 3 will encounter a closure on southbound Highway 1 of the #1 (left) lane at Soledad Dr. from 9 am to 12 noon.

Message and directional signs will be in place to alert drivers in advance of these lane closures and travelers can expect delays of up to 5 minutes.

Located in Monterey, FNMOC is the lead activity within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for numerical weather prediction and coupled air-sea modeling. FNMOC fulfills this role through means of a suite of sophisticated global and regional meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) models, extending from the top of the atmosphere to the bottom of the ocean, which is supported by one of the world's most complete real-time METOC databases. While focused on maritime travel, METOC generates environmental forecasts for military personnel and platforms functioning in all physical warfighting domains: sea, land, air, and even for space-based platforms.

County of Monterey and Friends of Laguna Seca Celebrate Positive Settlement for Laguna Seca Recreation Area

The County of Monterey Department of Public Works, Facilities, and Parks and Friends of Laguna Seca (FLS) announce the execution of a comprehensive settlement that ends the Laguna Seca Raceway lawsuit, Highway 68 Coalition vs. County of Monterey.

“We view this as a favorable resolution for the County and its long-term partner at Laguna Seca, the nonprofit organization Friends of Laguna Seca,” stated Nick Pasculli, county communications director. “The future of the track and the amazing recreation area, which is a premier County Park, is bright. Laguna Seca is loved by local, national, and global car enthusiasts and also by the tens of thousands of people who enjoy the area.”

The settlement, announced in a March 22 press release, clarifies the long-term plans of FLS to conduct a previously planned sound impact assessment at the racetrack and carry out appropriate sound mitigation measures, all as part of being a good neighbor to the surrounding community.
