Recap:
City of Monterey
- At their June 18 meeting, the Monterey City Council made new appointments to board and commissions with the deliberate intent of allowing new people to get involved
- Council has approved a balanced budget with money put into reserves for future improvements to the Sports Center, the Conference Center, and utility and street relocation in preparation for sea level rise
- Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee has allocated funds for the remodel of Fire Stations 12 and 13 and the Hilltop Park Center (the largest and most-used community park building)
- NCIP Committee is also looking at funding the undergrounding of utilities
- City staff is working internally on developing a plan and preparing public outreach, perhaps with an undergrounding community committee
- The city council may consider establishing an underground utility program in the fourth quarter of 2024
- At their July 18 meeting, the Monterey City Council will consider administrative amendments to the city charter and approval of new collective bargaining agreements with city public employee unions
- City is partnering with the Old Monterey Business Association (OMBA) for Independence Day/4th of July celebrations, including the Monterey 4th of July Parade and the City of Monterey's Big 4th of July Celebration & Backyard Food Fest
- There is also the annual Monterey Firefighters Charity Pancake Breakfast at Fire Station #11 benefiting MY Museum on July 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Healthcare
- Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), the hospital of Montage Health, continues to operate just over capacity, mainly because of surgeries, respiratory illnesses, and accidents
- The hospital has not noticed an increase in COVID cases, although the virus is circulating in some local assisted living facilities
- Montage recommends residents not needing emergency treatment go to one of their MoGo Urgent Care facilities (in Marina, Monterey, or Carmel) rather than the CHOMP emergency room
- Montage continues to recruit more general practitioners and specialists and will soon have over 100 doctors
- Montage has ordered a second linear accelerator for their cancer center and are now doing cancer genetic screening
- Leadership changes for cancer center forthcoming
- New treatment options for prostate and urological issues will soon be announced
Hospitality/Tourism
- Big Sur Update - Caltrans has announced opening of the section of Highway 1 south of Big Sur closed by “Paul’s Slide”
- This allows access a bit farther north from San Luis Obispo County. Caltrans intends to have the section closed by "Regent’s Slide” to be open in late fall, at which point the entire Big Sur section of Highway 1 will be open to thru traffic
- The Rocky Creek Slipout is open with one-lane traffic control
- Traffic from the north (Monterey Peninsula) to Big Sur has picked up almost to 2023 levels but falls short of the levels from when Highway 1 was completely open
- See Monterey will be issuing information to locals encouraging them to visit, with appropriate warnings about responsible visits and respecting the local residents
See Monterey (formerly MCCVB)
- Overall, the market is relatively flat on occupancy only -.7% with ADR down slightly -1.7%.
- Luxury set is giving away a little rate to hold only occupancy
- Full service properties are doing the same with rate to keep occupancy at 0.8% and down -0.8% in ADR
- Competitors: Napa is giving away rate -4.0% to drive occupancy which is up 3.8%, Sonoma has given up the most in ADR -5.9% to keep occupancy at 1.1% and SLO down in both ADR -0.6% and occuipancy -1.7%
- New direct Minneapolis flight in August
- See Monterey is developing a marketing campaign to promote flights to Minneapolis that begin in August

- See Monterey also about to launch a partnership with Atlas Obscura to market unusual attractions and to help vamp up our Monterey County itinerary, set to launch next week
- See Monterey is promoting the Monterey County Emergency Readiness, Response, and Recovery program as the fire season approaches
Non-Profit
- United Way Monterey County is celebrating the second anniversary of its Community Impact Center in Downtown Salinas and holding a ribbon cutting for their Legacy Wall

- In addition to providing public and non-profit services, United Way also has provided Community Impact Center Conference Rooms for more than two dozen community groups with more than 5.,000 users. The facility also leases space for non-profits and public entities

- Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) will be introducing a new residential battery storage program in 30 - 60 days

- Success story - 1st time buyer into market bought a home in Spreckels, listed at $800,000 but lowered $25,000 under asking price. Peak of market now

The County of Monterey Public Defender’s Office is pleased to announce the annual “Clean Slate Day” on Friday, June 28, 2024 at three different locations. The event aims to assist individuals clean past records of felony and misdemeanor arrests and convictions in the hopes of helping overcome barriers to employment, housing, education and public benefits. This event is limited to Monterey County criminal matters.
