MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.

Recap:

City of Monterey

  • It’s a new fiscal year and the city’s budget is balanced
  • Negotiations are wrapping up for new contracts between the city and employee labor organizations
  • On July 16, 2024, the Monterey City Council will consider Housing Element revisions based on consultation with the California Department of Housing and Community Development
  • State law and subsequent actions of the Association of Monterey Bay Governments (AMBAG) set the Regional Housing Needs Allocation for the City of Monterey in the 6th Cycle (2023-2031) as 3,654 new housing units. The revisions include the city’s Fort Ord parcel as a potential housing site, but — contrary to a false and anonymous claim — does NOT include “Windows on the Bay” coastal land
  • Note: The city’s Regional Housing Needs Allocation target for the 5th Cycle (2015-2023) was 650 residential units. In the end, 161 new units were built in that nine-year period
  • The Environmental Impact Report for the new Housing Element can be found at this link: Monterey 2031 General Plan Update Environmental Impact Report (EIR)
  • All information about the new Housing Element can be found at this link: Monterey 2031 - General Plan Update
  • Monterey Recreation Youth Camps are in full swing and sold out

County of Monterey

Healthcare

  • Montage Health has provided a $100,000 grant to the Monterey Fire Department for heart monitors and 3 Lucas CPR devices
  • The fire department serves the City of Monterey, City of Pacific Grove, City of Carmel, Sand City, the Naval Postgraduate School, La Mesa Village, and Monterey Regional Airport

Aquarium

  • The next planned project at the Aquarium is an upgrade of the exhibit for the colony of African penguins
  • Currently planning events for 40th year anniversary in October 2024

Construction

  • Monterey County residents and organizations are encouraged to send correspondence to the California Coastal Commission in support of the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) SURF! Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project
  • Construction is ongoing at Monterey Regional Airport on various phases of safety upgrades, which will culminate in the construction of a new terminal
  • Construction is ongoing at ReGen Monterey (the former Monterey Regional Waste Management District) on a base liner waste containment system for a seventh landfill module.

Transportation

  • Pilot program to prevent use of Toro Park neighborhood as a commuter cut-through
  • The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), Caltrans District 5, and the County of Monterey have announced a partial closure of Torero Drive, an access street to Toro Park along Highway 68, starting on Friday, July 12, 2024. The partial road closure will continue through Tuesday, October 1, 2024 as a component of the “Toro Park Cut Through Traffic Pilot Project”
  • Fixed signs and changeable electronic messaging signs will be placed along Highway 68 and within Toro Park to inform motorists of the partial road closure
  • This pilot project will re-route drivers who cut through Serra Village and Toro Park during commute hours to avoid traffic congestion on Reservation Road and Highway 68. Regrettably, Toro Park has been inundated with drivers who take Portola Drive as an alternate route and speed through a school zone to re-enter Highway 68 at Torero Drive
