Recap:
City of Monterey
- The Monterey Trolley of Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) wrapped up for the summer at the end of Labor Day (Monday, September 2, 2024)
- Release of final ridership statistics will be forthcoming
- The City of Monterey Parking Division reports that the summer tourist season started slowly but by July the parking use was exceeding 2022
- Release of final parking statistics will be forthcoming
- This afternoon (Tuesday, September 3), the Monterey City Council will receive the 2024 annual presentation from Central Coast Community Energy (3CE), the regional community choice aggregation public power agency
- The agency is governed by local representatives from the 35 city and county governments it serves on the Central Coast
- On September 20, the Monterey City Council is scheduled to discuss proposed changes to parking guidelines in the Downtown Specific Plan to encourage additional mixed-use development
- They will also discuss a proposal to terminate Calle Principal vehicle travel before its intersection with Madison Street and create a pocket park that connects with the Monterey Museum of Art. The complicated intersection of Calle Principal and Madison has been prone to accidents
County of Monterey
Aquarium
- As reported by KION on August 27, 2024 ("Monterey Bay Aquarium Ranks in Top 10 Best Aquariums in U.S."), the Monterey Bay Aquarium is cited first in a Travel + Leisure article entitled "10 Best Aquariums in the U.S.”
- The aquarium reports "a successful and busy summer”
- Visitor data is forthcoming, but the aquarium estimates about 750,000 summer visitors
- This includes visitors using the Museums for All program, which provides free admission to a holder of a CalFresh Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) card and three associated guests
- The 40th anniversary of the opening of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is coming
Healthcare
- Dr. Susan Swick, executive director of the Ohana Center for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health, has been selected as a 2024 Woman of the Year by Assemblymember Dawn Addis
- The newly-opened Ohana facility treats and cures mental illness for children and adolescents. It also works tirelessly to prevent it by promoting mental fitness as a cornerstone of a healthy life

- Montage Health’s Infectious Disease Medical Director, Dr. Martha Blum, notes that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is again recommending that people get COVID and flu shots in September and October, before these respiratory illnesses become more widespread later in the fall
Big Sur
- Highway 1 continues to be closed from a point 16.8 miles south of Big Sur to a point 2.1 miles north of Lucia
- At this time, Caltrans is indicating that its contractors will not be able to reopen the highway before the rainy season begins
- This will be the longest closure of Highway 1 along the Big Sur Coast since the highway’s opening in 1937
- Your Chamber will keep you informed on how this affects Big Sur businesses and the Monterey County economy
- For now, locals should be aware that Big Sur remains accessible from the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur businesses are eager for your patronage
Naval Post Graduate School
- Registration period ends today (Tuesday, September 3, 2024) for the "Naval Innovation Center and Naval Postgraduate School Modernization Industry Day” to be held on September 10, 2024 at the Naval Postgraduate School, King Hall
- This is a free event to introduce local industry partners to construction contracts and other economic opportunities with the planned Naval Innovation Center
- Your Chamber’s President & CEO will be one of the speakers at this event

- Although the registration period is closed, your Chamber is offering late registrations for the 22nd Annual Leadership Luncheon until 5:00 p.m. today (September 3, 2024)
