City of Monterey

• Council meeting tonight: Study Session: Receive a Report on the History of the Lower Presidio Lease Agreement and Receive Initial Feedback on Future Plans for the Lease (Item 9)

County of Monterey

• Monterey County Revolving Loan Fund
• Startup Funds for up to 50k

Construction

• Progress continues on construction of housing and acquiring commercial tenants for Promenade at the Dunes (by Shea Homes) in the City of Marina

• Trader Joe’s is expected to open in late November
• Shea Homes is also building Sea Haven and The Dunes residential developments
• Three hotels will be under construction next year at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Imjin Parkway
• A gas station will be built there first

• Open for free in October to Monterey County residents — tickets still available
• Free Admission for Monterey County Residents

Tourism & Hospitality

• August Occupancy Recap
• Occupancy was up 5.5% over last year ; Group up 14.6% and Transient up 2.4%. ADR up 2.6% to last year with group ADR -2.4 and transient +3.9%
• YTD Occupancy results are relatively flat to last year at 0.7% up in occ and 0.9% up in ADR
• There was a big catch up in limited service group occupancy up 82.8%
• Luxury occupancy up 3.7%, with transient up 8.5% and group -3.8%
• Group hotels occupancy up 1.5% with transient down slightly -0.2 and group up 4.2%
• Big Sur: Letter from the CEO of See Monterey
• Due to safety concerns, Caltrans announced that Regent's Slide will not be cleared this year, approaching two years of closure impacting residents, businesses, and hospitality workers
• In an effort to educate visitors on new parking restrictions on Old Coast Road, See Monterey will launch a radio and paid social media campaign, pairing parking info with open-for-business messaging

Real Estate

• New listings per week have slowed down, as is typical around this time of year. From a high of 97 a month ago to 61
• Total inventory continues to hover 940 - 960, as sellers look for qualified buyers at present rates to follow through
• Agents report more than the usual number of deals falling through and properties being put back on the market

Non-Profits

• United Way Monterey County is recruiting volunteers to help with their Free Tax Preparation Service
• Trainings offered on Saturdays in November at CSUMB, and Saturdays in January at the UWMC in Salinas
• Volunteers then certify with the IRS and volunteer through April 15
• This is a great way to help low income workers claim the refunds and credits due to them

• The United Way Monterey County Community Impact Center in Salinas will be adding more Murals to its exterior, creating more attractions to the downtown Salinas business district
• UWMC is currently seeking sponsors for the next three murals
• MCGives! is ramping up.  Fundraising will be launched November 14 with Monterey County Weekly, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and Community Foundation for Monterey County

Bay Federal Credit Union Announces New Branch in Marina at Promenade at the Dunes

Bay Federal Credit Union is excited to announce the upcoming opening of its newest branch at the Promenade at the Dunes in Marina. Slated for completion by June 2025, this will be the Credit Union’s 8th branch, marking an important expansion into the growing and vibrant Marina community.

The 1,750-square-foot branch will offer a full suite of personal and business banking services, including account openings, loan consultations, and financial services. The new branch will also feature a 24-hour ATM with exterior access for added convenience.

Construction is set to begin by the end of the year, and Bay Federal looks forward to hosting a grand opening celebration for the Marina community in mid-2025.

Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Central Coast

An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for portions of the Bay Area and Central Coast through 11 PM Wednesday. Interior areas will reach up to 110 degrees while coastal areas will be in the 80s to mid 90s. The announcement from NOAA also notes there is a possibility the warning could be extended another day or two, particularly in inland areas. 

There will be a high risk for heat-related illnesses in interior parts of the county, and a moderate risk for those on the coast. Additionally, critically dry fuel sources and and gusty offshore winds will lead to increased chances for fire starts and fire spread. Please practice all HEAT SAFETY and FIRE SAFETY precautions this week.
