Update on Developments in Sand City and Seaside
The large multi-story building going up near Highway 1 is the South of Tioga Hotel and Residential Development project in Sand City. It will be a dual-branded Marriott Courtyard and Residence Inn, combined with 356 apartment units that include 52 units reserved as affordable housing. There will also be a restaurant.
The project under construction on Broadway in Seaside, up the hill from the intersection of Broadway and Fremont Streets, is Seagrove (formerly called The Ascent). It will consist 106 residential units—16 of them designated as affordable—and about 4,000 square feet of commercial space.
Groundbreaking occurred on September 16 for the Grand Hyatt Resort Hotel in Seaside, located on the grounds of the Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses. It will include 330 guest rooms and 35,000 square feet of meeting space.
Shea Homes is now proceeding with Phase 4 of the Enclave at Cypress Grove. This will be 30 single-family homes adjacent to Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses. The entrance to Phase 4 will be a new private street called Bay View Drive on the west side of General Jim Moore Boulevard, just north of the Golf Course and hotel entrance at McClure Way. Another 30 homes in Phase 3 of the Enclave have been under construction. The Phase 3 entrance is off Coe Avenue, west of the intersection of Coe Avenue and General Jim Moore Boulevard.
On Thursday, November 21, the Seaside City Council will vote on spending an additional $250,000 in proceeds from the Fort Ord Reuse Authority (FORA) bond issue, approved by the FORA board shortly before its dissolution in 2020, on continued soil testing for lead contamination on the site of the future Campus Town development. The Seaside City Council has also approved funding from the same bond issue for demolition work at the Campus Town site. Approved in 2020 by the Seaside City Council, Campus Town will be a 122-acre residential and commercial development near the freeway interchange at Lightfighter Avenue and Highway 1, bounded by Lightfighter to the north, Gigling Road to the south, 1st Avenue to the west and 8th Avenue to the east. It is adjacent to California State University, Monterey Bay. It will include 1,485 housing units.
Also on Thursday, November 21, the Seaside City Council will vote on authorizing the notice of a Request for Proposals (RFP) for mixed use (commercial and residential) development of the Main Gate property. This is a 50 acre site bounded by Highway 1 to the west, 2nd Avenue to the east, Divarty Street to the north and Lightfighter Drive to the south. The Judicial Council of the State of California is already committed to building a new Monterey County Superior Court building on five acres of this site. An earlier proposal to develop this site did not work out.
