City of Seaside Celebrates Groundbreaking for Campus Town

Seaside-based developer KB-Bakewell Seaside Venture LLC has been working for ten years to begin construction of Campus Town on the site of 122.23 acres of abandoned and blighted parcels of the former Fort Ord along Lightfighter Drive in Seaside. The Seaside City Council approved the project in March 2020, just before COVID-19 public health orders took effect. Now, on April 11, 2025, the developer and the City of Seaside hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at the intersection of Lightfighter Drive and Second Avenue. Your Chamber had representatives in attendance.

When built out, Campus Town will include up to 1,485 housing units, 250 hotel rooms, 75 youth hostel beds, 150,000 square feet of retail, dining, and entertainment uses, and 50,000 square feet of office, flex, and light industrial uses. It will also include parks, nine acres of public open space, and 3.3 acres of private open space. This will be an asset for the Monterey Peninsula and a welcome addition for future students, faculty, and workers at the adjacent campus of California State University, Monterey Bay.

Monterey-Salinas Transit Gets Started with SURF! Bus Rapid Transit Lane

On March 21, 2025, the California Transportation Commission awarded Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) the final grant needed among the funding sources assembled to pay for the SURF! Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, including a dedicated bus lane adjacent to Highway 1 between Marina and Seaside. The California Coastal Commission approved the project on September 12, 2024.

Yesterday (April 14, 2025), the MST board of directors approved a contract with Graniterock-Myers JV [Joint Venture] for construction of the project. A Chamber representative participated in the Early Work Site Tour on April 11. And MST has scheduled a SURF! groundbreaking ceremony on June 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the future 5th Street Station in Marina. This project is happening.
