County of Monterey
- The Monterey County Board of Supervisors seeks applicants for the position on its Monterey County Economic Development Committee designated to represent Higher Education.
- The committee “advises the Board of Supervisors on appropriate economic development policies, programs and activities to ensure a Countywide perspective in support of a diversified economy, higher paying jobs and an expanded revenue base for local government services, while preserving and protecting the County’s agricultural, tourism and education economic base in collaboration with cities.” Your Chamber agrees with this objective.

- Today, the Board of Supervisors will review recommendations from the Measure AA Ad Hoc Committee on how best to spend revenue from the new sales tax (Measure AA) approved by Monterey County voters in November 2024.
- Among the committee’s recommendations are these expenditures in unincorporated areas of the county: $1,450,000 for AXON body-cameras for the Monterey County Sheriff's Department, $50,000 for the Reservoir Farms AgTech initiatives, and $50,000 for the Regenerative California blue economy and fisheries initiatives.

- Also today, the Board of Supervisors will authorize sale of property at the Mixed Use Town Center (Phase 3) of the East Garrison development to CHISPA Housing (Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association, Inc.) for construction and operation of 66 very low and low-income units.

City of Monterey
- Your Chamber of Commerce will be represented at the City of Monterey Planning Commission meeting this evening (Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at 7:00 pm) for an agenda item involving an application for a permit to convert an existing commercial office on Garden Road to a Montessori community school for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years old.
- The Monterey Regional Airport, the Monterey County Airport Land Use Commission, and the City of Monterey assert that this proposed childcare facility would have a unique public safety concern due to its location near an active airport runway.
- For many years, Garden Road has been a controversial location for proposed uses because of its proximity to the airport and its status as one of the few Monterey Peninsula locations where there are obvious opportunities to convert underused or vacant commercial buildings to other functions.

- Your Chamber of Commerce will be represented at the Monterey City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 4:00 pm for an agenda item to discuss tax and fee increases.
- Your Chamber has supported or maintained a neutral position on numerous tax and fee increases proposed by the City of Monterey and many other city and regional local governments over the past ten years. As the Chamber has asked in the past, has there been a comprehensive analysis of ways to limit or constrain government spending?

Community Radio KSQD Announces Broadcast & Podcast Community Workshop in Monterey
Community radio station KSQD FM, known as K-Squid, announces the fifth in a series of Broadcast and Podcast Workshops on September 18 in Monterey. The event will be at the El Estero Park Center, 777 Pearl Street (next to Dennis The Menace Park), on Thursday, September 18, from 6 to 8 PM.
The Broadcast and Podcast Workshops are led by Peabody Award winning radio show host Nikki Silva, joined by other broadcasters and podcasters from K-Squid Community Radio. The 2-hour event will cover interviewing techniques and best practices, how to pick and use the right equipment for optimal sound, editing for radio and podcasts, plus how to list your podcast on streaming networks or get it on the radio. All experience levels are welcome.
