MISSION: We seek to provide timely, informative updates on regional topics relevant to our members.
Recap:
CITY OF MONTEREY
- The Monterey City Council meets tonight (October 21, 2025) to continue discussions of how to eliminate a projected $10 million city budget deficit for Fiscal Year 2026-2027. See the meeting agenda here: Monterey City Council - Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
- The leading proposals to eliminate the deficit are various kinds of tax extensions and tax increases and diverting unused funding from the Neighborhood Community Improvement Program (NCIP). Neither layoffs of city staff nor use of reserves are included in the proposals.
- The Neighborhood Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee discussed proposals in a joint meeting with the city council on Monday, October 13. About $18 million is in the NCIP fund and $6 million of that is reserved for projects not yet started. See that joint meeting agenda here: Special Joint Meeting of City Council and NCIP Committee - Monday, October 13, 2025.
- The City of Monterey has announced Mike Pacheco as the new City of Monterey Parks & Recreation Director. The City of Monterey Parks & Recreation Department budget is nearly $19 million with a total of about 47 full-time and 350 part-time seasonal positions across five divisions. Former Parks & Recreation Director, Karen Larson, retired in July 2025. Mr. Pacheco’s first day will be November 3, 2025. He will offer community meet and greet opportunities in the coming months. See the press release at City Manager Names Mike Pacheco as New City of Monterey Parks & Recreation Director - October 15, 2025.
