Response to immediate threat

1.   City of Monterey. City Council meeting today: discussion of how to achieve racial equity and promote diversity and inclusion; City playgrounds closed; future topic of cannabis distribution to be addressed this year.

2.   Health Care. County Department of Health and hospital websites are the best sources about coronavirus related questions. See links below.

3.   Hospitality & Tourism. Marketing efforts continue, focus on Nevada, Arizona and short-distance flying markets; we are in purple and our main competitors are in red; competition is fierce now.

4.   State of California. Sacramento Report. Right of return bill, supported by unions, was vetoed by Gov. Newsom; equity focus metric for reopening may hinder reopening in Monterey County.

5.   Community Foundation. $3.3 million raised for COVID-19 fund; $1 million raised for fire relief; survey of non-profit agencies to determine their viability; non-profit are direct service providers instead of government; huge losses in revenue for organizations depending on special events to function.

6.   Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants.  

7.   Education. Chamber to host 1st Annual Education Forum on October 16, 2020 – 12:00pm to 2:00pm via ZOOM. Save the Date; event will underscore impact of pandemic on education: access to Wi-Fi; decline in enrollment can result in school closures; child care is huge problem for families and employers; workforce development impacted also by lack of affordable housing;

8.   Transportation. TAMC and Blue Zones Monterey County: Commute challenge: see attached.

MONTEREY COUNTY COMMUNTERS CHALLENGED TO TAKE A TRIP TO THE MOON

From October 1 – October 31, anyone living, attending school and/or working in Monterey County can participate in special events planned during the month and compete to win over $5,000 in prizes which can be won during weekly, individual, team and employer competitions.

Each participant who completes and tracks at least two smart alternative commute trips during the month will be automatically entered into a weekly random drawing to win a $200 gift card. Winners of the challenge will be announced in November. Participating in the “Go831 Commute Challenge” is easy:

1. Participants must first register online at go831.rideamigos.com using their work or student email link distributed by their employer or college.
2. Next, they can search for smart commute options on the go831.rideamigos.com platform.
3. To get credit for their smart commute trips, participants must track them on the go831.rideamigos.com platform or download and use the CommuteTrack app by Rideamigos.

We were able to present one live performance during the summer! 

We broadcast a live 4th of July Concert with our 40-piece orchestra and two vocal soloists from the outdoor amphitheater of York School. The performance was streamed over the internet and broadcast live over AMP Television. Our Covid-19 mitigations were approved by the Monterey County Health Department and the event was presented without a live audience.
For this period of on-line K-12 education in Monterey County we are creating three free programs to assist local school music educators in their on-line teaching.


First, we are recording a series of instructional programs to be broadcast weekly over AMP Television. Titled Pops! Pros Teach, this is a series of 8 1/2-hour episodes created by our principal players devoted to the basic principles of playing flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion. It is targeted at middle and high school students and will also be posted on our website.

Second, we are creating an on-line version of the symphonic fairy tale for children, Peter and the Wolf, where the narrator tells a children's story, while the orchestra illustrates it. We are filming two versions, English and Spanish, of this piece.  

The program will also be presented, free of charge, in county elementary schools via a live-streamed Zoom session with the musicians, combined with a "screen sharing" of the video followed by an interactive question and answer session. The video will also be available to the public on our website.

Third, Pops! Pros Teach LIVE is a program that we have created which offers one-hour instrument clinics by Pops! professional players via Zoom. 

The goal is to reach Monterey County high schools with these free, interactive, coaching sessions.
