Response to immediate threat
1. City of Monterey. Emergency Rental Assistance program available to qualified people who live, work or formerly work in the City of Monterey; up to 6 months of rental assistance as grant; United Way is assisting or call 2-1-1 for info; application can be found on link below; same assistance is also available at the County level; Monterey County Elections has an official ballot box in front of the Library and at Embassy Suites.
2. General Conversation: Michaelle Stanford – TPO Human Resources
What is New and what is coming soon? New bills signed into law. Several new eye opening pieces of legislation will affect small businesses in California on January 1, 2021; see attached recap for all details; noteworthy: California Family Rights act will be significantly expanded to employers with 5 or more employees (combo of PT and FT); more revisions about sick leave as kin care; more exceptions to determining independent contractor status; prohibition of retaliation against victims of crime if time off needed to deal with legal or medical issues; deadline for harassment education is December 31, 2020.
4. Hospitality & Tourism. MCHA approaching John Laird to discuss effects to hospitality and to bring him up to speed; no response to letter from BOS to Gov. Newsom; equity metrics is a major concern for our hospitality industry.
5. Health Care. Cases are still climbing in County (10,684 positive and 80 fatalities); no visitors or volunteers allowed at CHOMP; iPad available for virtual visits.
6. Financial, SBA, Loans & Grants. First 10 forgiveness of loan requests were received at Monterey County Bank; very slow process; Monterey County BOS is reviewing a program under CARES Act with grants available to small businesses; decision due today; SBDC administers loans available to those impacted by fires ($50K or less).
7. Education. CSUMB reports steady enrollment; online education positively accepted; President’s Series: “Truth, Fiction and Alternative Facts” available on CSUMB website today at 3:30pm; link to RSVP: below; Chamber 1st Annual Education Forum featuring education leaders coming up on Friday October 16, 2020 at 12:00pm; registration link below.
