Alliance on Aging Celebrates 60th Anniversary of Older Americans Act With Presentation of Resolution at Board of Supervisors Meeting May 16

May 8, 2023

SALINAS, CA. (May 6, 2023) — The Alliance on Aging will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Older Americans Act at the Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting May 16, where a resolution honoring older Americans will be presented. The meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, Board of Supervisors Chamber, 168 West Alisal St., first floor, in Salinas. Join other seniors from throughout the county by attending the meeting. Free bus passes to the event will be available and free sack lunches will be provided by the Monterey County Food Bank. Call Alliance on Aging/The HUB at (831) 646-5050 for more information. By 2030, for the first time in American history, there will be more people over the age of 60 than under the age of 18. Every 10.3 seconds a Boomer turns 60 and 95-plus is the fastest-growing age group. Alliance on Aging has provided essential services to seniors throughout Monterey County for more than 50 years. Congress passed the Older Americans Act (OAA) in 1965 in response to concern by policymakers about a lack of community social services for older persons. The original legislation established authority for grants to states for community planning and social services, research and development projects, and personnel training in the field of aging. The law also established the Administration on Aging (AoA) to administer the newly created grant programs and to serve as the federal focal point on matters concerning older persons. Although older individuals may receive services under many other federal programs, today the OAA is considered to be a major vehicle for the organization and delivery of social and nutrition services to this group and their caregivers. The OAA also includes community service employment for low-income older Americans; training, research, and demonstration activities in the field of aging; and vulnerable elder rights protection activities. About Alliance on Aging Alliance on Aging provides services and resources that address the challenges and opportunities for older adults in Monterey County. Alliance on Aging was established in 1970 by a group of concerned local citizens who wanted to help seniors remain safely in their own homes for as long as possible. This volunteer-driven organization which began as a single program with a handful of volunteers is now a multi-purpose senior service agency with over 200 volunteers. The largest non-profit provider of senior services in Monterey County, the Alliance on Aging serves over 7,000 individuals every year. Alliance on Aging programs include Medicare Counseling & Education (HICAP) , Senior Peer Counseling, Nursing Home Information & Advocacy, Tax Counseling for the Elderly, Benefits Checkup and a monthly Senior Outreach Luncheon in Salinas. Alliance on Aging staff and volunteers provide direct services, information and education to seniors, adult children, caregivers and "baby boomers" who are approaching and preparing for their senior years. The Alliance on Aging's administrative and program offices are located at 247 Main St. in Salinas. Office hours at this location are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding national holidays). Program staff also occupy office space at the Monterey Senior Center at 280 Dickman Ave. in Monterey. Outreach staff make regular visits to seniors at sites and venues throughout the county. Spirals by the Arch, a unique consignment and benefit shop located in Pacific Grove, helps to support the programs of the agency. Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency Welcomes New General Manager And Deputy General Manager

New leadership brings immense experience in groundwater management

April 19, 2023

SALINAS, Calif. — Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency (SVBGSA) today announced it has named Piret Harmon as its new General Manager and added Sarah Hardgrave as the second Deputy General Manager to lead the agency as it works to successfully implement state-required Groundwater Sustainability Plans for the six subbasins in Monterey County that are administered by the SVBGSA. Piret Harmon comes to SVBGSA after serving as General Manager of the Scotts Valley Water District from 2013 to 2022. In that role, she also was key in the formation of the Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency, a groundwater sustainability agency in Santa Cruz County. Harmon succeeds Donna Meyers, who served as General Manager of SVBGSA from 2019 to 2023. "I look forward to being responsive and contributing to the communities we serve in Monterey County — building trust, improving efficiencies and increasing transparency via open dialogue and collaboration," said Piret Harmon. "I'm passionate about leading the agency to be an innovative and effective catalyst that is focused on turning groundwater sustainability challenges into opportunities." In the role of the General Manager at the Scotts Valley Water District, Harmon and her team redefined what an open and transparent organization looks like, deployed technology in every aspect of the operation and empowered employees to convert challenges into solutions. Harmon is equally versed in managing operational disciplines, leading people and guiding the organizations to reach their potential. She excels at streamlining processes, seeing complex initiatives through to completion, and encouraging collaboration. Harmon holds a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Tallinn Technical University and a master's degree in Business Administration from Concordia International University. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Regional Water Management Foundation in Santa Cruz County and is an active member of Association of California Water Agencies' Local Government Committee and Business Development Committee. Sarah Hardgrave, a new Deputy General Manager at SVBGSA, has been active in water resource issues in Monterey County for over 20 years. Hardgrave has been a project manager for several water supply, sewer, stormwater and flood risk reduction projects, including the design and environmental review phases of the Carmel River Floodplain Restoration and Environmental Enhancement Project, a multi-benefit flood control and habitat restoration project. Her experiences have given her a depth of understanding of water issues throughout Monterey County and the need for the SVBGSA to work closely with its stakeholders and other agencies to manage water resources and infrastructure.

End-of-Life Care Results in DAISY Award for Salinas Valley Health Nurse

April 5, 2023

SALINAS, CA, April 5, 2023 – Past recipients of the DAISY Award for nursing excellence at Salinas Valley Health have received recognition for saving a patient's life under intense medical circumstances. This month, the honor goes to someone who proves compassionate care can be just as significant in death. Kristen Green Meadows, RN, BSN, has worked in the intensive care and critical care units since joining Salinas Valley Health in July of 2018 and consistently rises to meet patient needs in the most challenging of circumstances. Four of Kristen's nursing colleagues nominated her for the DAISY Award sharing many examples of caring connections and one specific situation involving end-of-life care. In one of many conversations with a terminally ill patient, Kristen discovered the woman wanted a piece of cheese and pepperoni pizza. Kristen made that request a reality and even though the patient could only enjoy a few bites, she expressed her gratitude many times. Laurel Black, RN added that days later, Kristen navigated difficult family dynamics to arrange for the patient's daughter to be at the bedside when her mother peacefully passed away. "Kristen is compassionate, kind and extremely professional with excellent clinical judgment," said Laurel Black, MSN, RN, CCRN, Salinas Valley Health ICU/CCU nurse. Another nomination entry noted "Kristen is one of the best team players I have the honor to work with. She cares for her patients and co-workers alike." When Kristen received the DAISY Award during a ceremony on the unit, she expressed her surprise at the beautiful and meaningful statue that accompanies the honor and addressed the group on hand for the event. "I'm overwhelmed with emotions," said Kristen Green Meadows, RN, BSN, DAISY Award recipient. "I'm so grateful to work with all of you. I'm in a field of daisies." In addition to Kristen, Angela Guerra, RN in the emergency department and Marie Marbach, RN, case manager were also nominated for the DAISY Award. Every month, Salinas Valley Health recognizes two extraordinary employees, one with a DAISY Award (for nurses) and another with a STAR Award (for all staff). STAR stands for the organization's core values of Support, Teamwork, Accountability and Respect. Nominations can be submitted by patients, visitors and staff. Nomination forms and drop boxes are located throughout the hospital and online. To learn more about the awards visit svmh.com/nomination.
